I think I'm going to try to port WFAS to Warband 1.171. Realistically, if you throw away the new scripts, quests, and anything to do with MP, it shouldn't be very hard, right? All you need is the troops, items, scenes, factions, parties, and map, right?

i don't know why you would, but you can literally copy the module over to warband as long as you bring all the resource files/textures and put them in the WFAS module's folder, and change all the load_resource lines to load_mod_resource

there's no similar feature in vanilla Warband. WFAS lets you equip mercs how you want to.

all I know is that in WFAS, you can't recruit polish peasants from villages and turn them into Hussars like swadian peasants to knights, you have to be a captain or something?

no more recruiting from villages, you have to either : recruit from mercenary camps (customizable gear and price adapts as you buy pricier gear for your soldiers)

or

recruit from faction castles

it's really weird and fun at the same time

Interesting, that custom equipment bit though -- I suspect that it also means if I simply recruit high-tier units I can "borrow" their armor for myself.

pretty pointless to port it then, that's like the best thing about the mod
doing it through source might keep everything intact
the merc camps replace training fields, so there's 5, one for each WFAS faction
the mercs can be equipped with any of the gear available to that faction's troops
the troop progression is changed, so there's a number of tiers of troops that are available: peasant tier is like normal, recruiting from villages
the higher tiers all have to be recruited from a town by a garrison commander, with varying restrictions on them (have to be lord of a faction for some, need special permissions for the best, etc)
though it's not working for me, not sure why, but the merc thing is

POP characters have higher starting stats iirc and the grind is overstated. POP is actually one of the fastest maps when it comes to King play.

POP is essentially identical to Native when it comes to character progression.

If you are King it is actually easier than Native due to ability to recruit any lord prisoner with sufficient relations at 100% success. POP is actually easier than Native when it comes to King play.
