Is there really a Kett squadmate?
Not confirmed. Just speculation that there'll be a 7th squadmate and it'll be a Kett. There's no confirmation and it seems pretty unlikely.

I'm finally getting around to ME3 after several years. I've had people tell me to pick up EGM. Is it recommended I vanilla it or is it a fine addition?
Should I get anything else?

EGM is a kind of a mixed bag. It adds a lot of dumb scanning shit and poorly written text quests, but it also adds neat stuff like all the mp armors and a shooting gallery on the ship. I'd say you're fine just playing vanilla / texture mods only.
I'd do the extended final anderson conversation. That's a neat one that doesn't really affect anything else but makes the scene more meaningful and less awkward.

EGM is a mixed bag. It has some decent stuff (like the additional emails or shooting galleries on the shoot) but I find many of its additions (like re-adding ME2 squadmates, as mobile turrets with no dialogue) totally unnecessary and/or too incomplete to be bothered with.
As for other mods, the only ones I'd heartily recommend are the Citadel Epilogue Mod + JohnP Alternate ending Mod.
