how does calibrating your mmr work? If I win all 10 of my calibrating matches, do i get placed with the best mmr from first calibrating?
Why do people say 5k mmr is filled with idiot players, when do players git gud. isn't your mmr just your win rate pretty much and mmr is just a number without alluding much to skill?

1v1 Dota is the one sure way you can improve
Adrian Nguyen
OK bitches, I haven't blessed with an articleblog for a long time now, so here's a piece about how entering the mainstream by Dota 2 is affecting the game we love. It's more of a reflection rather than a discovery, so you might not be very surprised when I put forward some of my arguments. A bit of context how I got to thinking about this issue: In the wake of the latest PewDiePie vs SJW, I mean, WSJ drama, Sargon of Akkad had a livestream with other prime shitposters and mentioned this one thing: "YouTube is said to be growing up and this is the same thing we heard about gamergate from 'le game jurnalysts', that 'gaming is growing up' aka we will now do the things our, corporate way and you will accept that bbc up your ass". I use quotation marks, despite those not being his exact words, but I think I captured the spirit well. So how does this relate to Dota and to the masterrace? One of the things we despise in LoL and Riot is the stuck-up attitude. The "we know better #13yearsofMOBA so suck it up twats, listen and believe" approach, which ends up in elaborate blogposts about how it's so hard to create and balance. This approach is also responsible for the moderation of everything, from players' behavior (via bans), all the way down to the metagame (via 'balancing'). It is why we pretty much equate Riot and their drones with SJWs, they're a bunch of moral busybodies who want to have control over everything - including e-sports scene.
Ethan Scott
What is the hardest battle pass quest
Jacob Bailey
Have you ever asked yourself: "why?" and after that "what's different between Worlds and TI?" Well, you already posted praise-posts about that situation. Worlds or any other Riot-controlled event is half about promotion of their game, half about accruing sponsors and advertisers. They want to be the Superbowl, they want to be create an illusion of being the hottest shit ever, so that Coca-Cola , McDonalds, GSK and BMW pay fat checks for the opportunity to push a 30-second commercial in the break or to place their logo inside the game or something. Meanwhile, TI (and majors) are still all about the game. We get some memes sprinkled in there, there are no ads, not even the Valve logo. That's cool, but look at the game itself; it got a lot more greedy than it's been at the release from closed beta and I'm afraid it might get worse over time. Back when Valve still had some integrity, there was this documents with guidelines and help for community creators (now converted into a steam webpage) - how to make sets properly so that they don't fuck with the game and stay in touch with the theme. Alpine Ursa, among others, triggered the first hattening
Chase Gray
No matter the community outrage, Valve keeps on adding more and more ridiculous sets, breaking colour schemes, altering silhouettes and distorting animations to the point where it's not hard to confuse Juggernaut with Sven. You might say that it's just a set, it doesn't matter in the end, you'll get used to it, etc. But when Valve fiddled with the GUI and completely fucked it up, that's part of the same attitude - we're in charge, we know what's good, fuck off. It took them waaaaaay more time than you'd expect from a company worth millions to implement those changes. Perhaps they were testing the waters - how far can we go before the community backlashes? I think they can go quite far, because we get more and more retards who blindly defend any decision from Valve, by the merit of "they're the smart game creators, they surely know better than you, the player"; others just dismiss any criticism as "whining".
Jack Baker
But perhaps the most blatant example of the 'corporization' and 'advertiser-friendliness' from Valve happened at the Shanghai Major. 2GD was obviously fucking with the organizers, partially because that's what he does, that's his stage persona, partially because the production of that tournament was an insult to everybody. But what does Valve do? They cave in, cull 2GD literally mid-broadcast, and then "lord gaben himself" comes down to the peasants in his mercy and blesses them with a message that "Yames is an ass".
That thread accrued something like 22k karma and over 20 gildings, before non-sheeple came in and burned gaben's ass for non-professional behavior.
So what's my point? We're threading on thin ice, in my opinion. The way Dota 2 community has grown made it catch the eye of major sponsors and advertisers, who will put pressure on Valve to let them make money via advertisements or other means. This means our genuinely grassroots-fostered scene might split along the lines of "officials" and "home-made", aka. the "coca-cola team" vs "pepsi team" will play in the official majors, while AdFinem and TeamOnyx will clash in Mr.Cat invitational.
I hope that won't happen, although there are more and more signs that, as Dota 2 is gaining mainstream attention, it will also attain the cancerous, self-righteous, politically-correct attitude.

what would have been an appropriate timeline for fixing the ui since you consider 39 days to be "waaaaaay more time than you'd expect from a company worth millions to implement those changes"?
John Howard
The thing about 2GD is: he wasn't culled because of community outrage. There wasn't a plethora of petitions to "REMOVE 2GD HE BE SO SHIT AND UNFUNNY". He's been removed because of a few "investors" and "advertisers" deemed his behavior dangerous to their interests. That's the point when we, "the community", lose control over the medium and there's a dictate from the top on what is acceptable. Basically, daddy Gaben came in and slapped everybody on the wrist, saying "bad 2GD, you bad for the money making machine; and all you who want to see him, shame on you, degenerates".
2GD used to make innuendos about fucking peoples' mothers and the most outrageous thing we had after that was Purge telling The Machine to stfu and not interrupt him. 'Member what the reddit had to say about that incident? Instant fucking outrage "this is so unpro, so uncool, lack of taste". Our talent has to defend itself more and more if they do some real savage banter on the Valve events and you can see them constrain themselves and talk about being pressured to do that. There's always a thread about "this ain't your backyard gaming event THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF THAT ESPN REPORTED ON, YOU HAVE TO BEHAVE!!1!: Slacks is a breeze of frash air, but he is still VERY MILD. He is what you get after dissolving Yames in an ocean (although he's still very enjoyable in his own way). And I want more banter/memes/savagery/retarded suits/Kappa signs everywhere!
Henry Gutierrez
They never take the reigns themselves, they rather blackmail/hire others to do the shit for them; they outsource. CS:GO learned it the hard way when the aimbot fiasco has been revealed. Valve said (quoting after Thoorin and I deem him reliable for this): you guys fix this shit or we just pull out from CS and nobody gets a fucking Major, nobody gets the rights to play CS:GO officially anymore. And ta-da, it fucking worked. And were the opinions on 2GD that split? The community loved him, at least the vocal part of it, while the advertisers hated him, because he didn't make the show family friendly. No matter that majority of e-sports audience is legally mature, those old farts think in TV terms (mommy and daddy and 2 children watch the telly together, gotta pander to the kids so they influence the parents). What Gabe/Valve did or tried do to James was character assassination. They deemed him "dangerous", "an ass", someone who "gives you trouble if you try working with him". That was a blow below the gut, yet you folk defend the corporation and shame the man.
Carter Cook

And yeah, 2GD was the /v/ mansion kid. He will forever be our guy.

Welcome to /d2g/! The best place to speak about dota.
Joseph Baker
people think 'skill' and 'being gud' is just a number people have, and, theoretically, you could make a 'skill' machine, scan people in it and it would tell you 'this player is THIS skilled! ', but thats just ignorance there are TONS of things to be good at in dota, and tons of stuff to be bad at, at 3/4/5k mmr you can often see idiots play and you ask yourself how the FUCK did this guy get his rating when he does stuff like THAT?? well the answer normally is that, for example, this guy might be good at drafting and executing laning stage so he gets good starts in most of his games and that has carried him to, say, 5k mmr, but his midgame and lategame decision making is way below average, so if he DOESNT have the draft advantage/has a bad lane, he will not know what to do or how to salvage it, making him look clueless then on the other side of the coin, you can have someone that does not perform well in the first 10 minutes of the game, but he knows what objectives to take, hes good at assessing what he can and can't do, splitpush, and maybe he's even a decent shotcaller and don't rage at his team and in most of his games he is able to rally his team decently enough to make up for his poor early game, but in some games he just makes too many mistakes in the laning stage, making it so he looks absolutely clueless again
these are just two examples, but for the most part this is why you often see people say ''my bracket is filled with IDIOTS'', and its often true because most people are unstable as fuck in their performance, or their hero pool is not that good so if they get knocked out of their comfort zone they don't know what to do, or of course they tilt and rage and flame or whatever because of autism
