head gasket failure but exterior leak, so it had a lot of life left in it. I had an NA ej25 get to 250,000km and die in a very explosive fashion, how you'd imagine a car exploding, steam spewing from the hood.

same can be said with anything. removing a boxer engine and stripping it of accessories is very straightforward, removing one took less like than getting an I4 out.

imo subarus are much easier/logical to work on that a lot of other makes.
subarus are pretty good
fairly reliable, outside of hg failure. but say you do clutch, timing belt at the same time as doing the hg both are immensely easier than with the engine still in the car.
cheapish/common parts too.

radiator is two bolts, fan plugs..thats it. many other accessories were only in with two bolts.
i'd rather work on it than my inline 4 or many others.

ive heard unless your overheating or completly cook the engine then there's no need to have the heads sent away for crack testing. I know you can often get away with just razorblading or scuffing away old gasket residue.

i know for a fact that subaru dealerships in america and australia will often not bother to have them machined but they will use orbital sanders to remove old gasket material so that they can just pump out repairs.

nigga you remove the airbox, washer bottle and battery to get to them,you dont need to jack up the engine. many other four bangers have intake manifolds, injectors or coilpacks which you need to remove to get to spark plugs.

Even with all that garbage removed my hands literally don't fit unless I jack the engine to create room.

Also the second gen legacy/liberty 2.5gt (mine) has the same hp as a first gen turbo, and all the handling bits are upgraded over the regular one too. It kind of evens out a little bit, plus all the GC/GD WRX stuff bolts right in.

I feel like if someone has the aptitude to turbocharge their own car at that age, they should be allowed to have it. Most people my age don't even know where to begin to change their own damn oil. I had to babysit my older brother the entire time I helped him rotate his tires and do a pad/rotor replacement on his car.
