I have one of these. It was bought in 04, they were trying to get rid of stock for the upcoming gen. 1.6 engine also.

The car is pretty comfy, but is slow as fuck and handles like a goddamn boat.

Wrong. The S40 looks like a 2000s car, the S70 looks timeless. S40 looks more dated.

850 has better galvanization, less electronics to break and lower weight.
They feel very different even though they are essensially the "same car"

Not if it's the one with onboard computer. Besides I once went to see a 850 and the ABS didn't work and it had a warning light dealing with the coolant (which I later learned has to do with a sensor malfunction caused by cables corroding). The owner also said he had an issue with the wires that go to the pump and he almost bought a new pump (worth about $1k here) but the mechanic suggested checking the wiring and the problem was indeed there. So plenty of things to go wrong with the car's electronics. The ABS module often stops working because of bad solder joints.

I got one of these as my first car, loved the shit out of it. It was in the shop almost every month for one bullshit thing or another, this was back before I learned to turn a wrench. Radiator cracked while I was driving it home after I bought it.

It always kind of seemed to me like it was supposed to compete with the BMW and Audi of the same years, but never got enough attention. Comfy interior, would recommend to anyone.
