Post-apoc near-extinction of humanity caused by strange creatures that devour practically everything. The creatures are named 'Aragami', which basically means 'god', as they are nigh-invulnerable except to their own kind. Humanity develops something that lets humans use that factor as weapons, almost literally, in the form of living blades and guns (and later on, transforming ones that can switch between the two) that can 'devour' the Aragami to boost themselves and use as gun ammo in various forms. Unfortunately, that factor doesn't always create capable hunters, as it implies there are some who gets 'devoured' by those very cells upon injection. So these Gods Eaters (it's singular by definition in JP, "God Eater", but localization had to fix that.)
tl;dr it's sci-fi post-apoc Monster Hunter but grim dark, has an edgy JRPG plot, and if you ask me, is a somewhat faster and hectic in terms of movement because almost unlike MonHun, both players and mobs are faster in their actions.
Well, this coming from a guy who played Gods Eater Burst on the PSP. Should try out the PC ones one day. Funny that Gods Eater gets English PC releases while Monster Hunter is still limited to Japanese only, or so I've seen.
