When you open a chest, the contents have to be added to your account. This means the servers are contacted and sent this info.
The mass chest opening caused by the patch overloaded that shit and they had to regulate it.

This doesn't explain the fucked up UI bugs and incorrect essence granted for duplicates though. That's another sasuga HiRez thing I reckon.

It's probably poorly designed architecture for their servers. The game servers scale, but the account servers are more limited.

I like that. New players should prepare by logging in every day for 3 weeks before actually playing.

It's a question of scale. They could easily have something that can handle this, but that would mean spending a lot of money for a peak load that isn't going to happen again for a while, if ever. It's like how so many games have server load issues on release day, because they know the player count will drop quickly, so they don't bother investing in better/more servers at the start.
