Ok, here goes.
The blue hedgehog we know as Sonic the Hedgehog has always possessed supersonic speeds, with Speed Force-esque kinetic energy manipulation and physics-defying capabilities. Sonic's origins and the source of this speed is entirely unknown. Maybe he's the soul of a pilot that died breaking the sound barrier for the first time in history? Maybe he's a personality and power born entirely from a young hedgehog's wishes to be strong? Maybe he experienced a lab accident where he broke the sound barrier on a treadmill while wearing his Power Sneakers and the accident dyed his fur blue? Who knows what the story is. He might have just been born with it.
But it wasn't until Sonic Adventure that Sonic's speed gets TRULY upgraded and leveled up. In Sonic Adventure, Sonic recieves upgrades that allow him to absorb and charge up light inside himself in order to move at the speed of light to dash and attack. Over time, Sonic strengthened this new skill and got faster and faster with it until he could move at those speeds easier and more casually, until finally, by the time of Sonic Colors, our blue hedgehog has surpassed it completely, and considers lightspeed to be small time and no challenge.
It's also after Sonic Adventure that we see Sonic use the power of the wind and the power of time (not Chaos Control) from his speed, but it could just be a result his strengthening of his speed in general.

Yo, thank you guys for the recommendations on the comics and romhacks in the last thread and sorry for not answering you there. I picked up a Sonic Universe (I think) comic at random, and got Shadow meeting Marine. It was great and I'm definitely going to read them.
I am downloading those sweet, sweet romhacks, hoping for the best. Also for the guy who kindly asked for my programme on Sonic games, I think that it would go like this

I didn't listed the games in a ranking order, as in I don't think that S2 is better than S3K since I enjoyed S3K way more. As for S1, I really hated how schizo it can be in terms of level design.
Most of the american stuff sucked. Sonic X was the only bad out of Sonic being japanese related.

Yeah man, I don't liked how it ramped up the boosting pads, bottomless pits and spikes from Advance 2 and Advance 3. I loved the music, and I did like Blaze the Cat a lot, but I didn't like the level design.
