But.. it was originally intended to be a convertible cruiser.. i kinda wish they had kept a small car like that and just called it something else "corvette mini". Keep it as small as it was in 53 (pic related) with 4-6 cylinder engines only and give it performance upgrades. probably would've capitilize on the future miata market.

Agreed, best corvette gen imo. experimentation with power methods like Turbos, Specialized V8s, V12s etc overshadowed the C5 gen where almost nothing happened (but the official entry into motorsports)

It made the Corvette more popular in the mainstream to the point where people who disliked them for common complaints of the C6(ugly interior) now have taken much more of a liken too them. This corvette gen may not be Veeky Forums's favorite but its definitely "The Corvette that got me interested in corvettes" to people who wouldn't have considered them before.

C5 came before the MT900. the guy who designed the C5 Corvette (which i heard wasn't even supposed to exist and was being worked on under GM's nose) went on to help Warren Mosler with the MT900 which you could consider a real insider to how a Mid-engine corvette would've been if GM actually green-lit one of the dozens of prototypes that were presented.
