That's sort of the issue, the paint is this weird gritty type, sorta like skateboard tape.

you can actually check out the adhesive ph on the msds of the vinyl used if concerned.
most of the stuff i use is from mactac and they seem to primarly use a neutral ph rubber based adhesive for vinyl, while some of the others I've looked into using for high/low temperature applications such as engine blocks and the freezers at work, use acryllic based, with a ph of 7 (also neutral).

so you'd actually get more damage to your helmet from leaving it in the rain or, you know, crashing.
