And I'm a sucker for explanations that save Asriel from reflowerdom. Not for fug or sexual, but the empathy I feel for a child who struggled not to hurt anyone and as a consequence was ultimately twisted into the antitheses of what he once was. I'm just going to call it here, for future reference. Chara is very defensive about monsters, hates humans and following the suicide attempt, named themselves sworn protector of monsters. I can only see a Storyshift Genocide end in one of 3 ways:

1) Chara repeatedly FIGHTs Frisk throughout the route like Nemesis, getting more and more injured along the way, before mounting a final defense in Final Corridor.

2) Chara lets Frisk kill everyone, fights them in Final Corridor to kill them and gain control of resets. (this might not be possible depending whether Napstaflowey can reset, or because it would go against Chara swearing to protect monsters, which is not a promise Sans has made)

3) Once Frisk reaches Final Corridor, they will claim everything is now meaningless due to their actions, and will kill themselves before Frisk's eyes.

My money's on 3, if only because I'm perfectly willing to imagine the artist skipping the fight for the 'emotional appeal'.

I sincerely don't. And not because I don't feel pity for Asriel, because I do. A lot of it, actually.

I hate this because it treats Frisk as disposable, a device solely there to be sacrificed. This is no different than what Asgore had planned, except we're supposed to cheer that Frisk does it willingly. It doesn't help that Fatz, by his own admission, glossed over most of the negative reactions to this choice because he 'didn't want to clog up the story with sads' which is a really boneheaded move considering what actually happens here. Not to mention one of the later comics implied that Frisk eventually fades within Asriel, which just adds insult to injury.

If you want to give Asriel a future, have people visit him, have him come to the surface as Flowey, find another way, break into the void and ask Gaster for help, pledge servitude to Toby, but don't treat the main character's trials as meaningless, by essentially ending their life like this.

You can argue how much of, say, One by One was wish fulfillment or plausible, but it never entertained the idea that Frisk should just throw away life like that.

It essentially makes the journey through Undertale kinda meaningless, especially since while there is some split control in DR apparently, 90% of the time Asriel is in control of everything and Frisk is just a voice.
