if you have them on fire at will no, if you focus a single unit yes because you've engaged them

Even with fire at will I usually pick targets for all ranged units - which eventually ends with them running off to their deaths.

No no no, you turn guard mode on and then target a unit within your archers' range and they won't follow it beyond their range.

I think it does interfere with them targeting other enemies after they kill or rout the initial target.

If they're in guard mode and you tell a ranged unit to attack something in their range, they'll shoot at it and won't chase it if they run outside of range. If they're in guard mode and the unit you tell them to attack is outside range they'll move to engage initially but won't chase after.

You can't hammer with an anvil just like you can't hammer a hammer. Ghouls are a step-up, but they kinda suck against anything in armor and just in general.
