Because Vaegir archers are Battanian remnants. Vaegirs are a mix of Northern Imperials, Sturgians, Khuzait, and Battanians. Look at Klethi, she's Battanian as fuck, she's from Uslum.

Companions make bad lords because the best skills for lords are shit to build up from scratch. They also have no relationships or establishment with other Calradian lords, and their lord personality is always martial.

It would be nice if you could do more organization with the companions, though. Like designate Katrin as company quartermaster, so party inventory uses her inventory skills, and things like that. Also designating a lieutenant or something that can detach from the company with their own party, and accompany you, hold position, or travel to a location. That'd be a nice feature, especially if you have no garrison-holding fief and need to a small party for a specific mission.

I did get in to MountAndFeast (surprised I had under 100ms ping, that's rare for me), it took me three times to guess the password though, then the game started alright and then the server disconnected. My username was Fluffy.

How should I customize my character and the companions in the long run? After some time, I want to start my own faction. Should I level my companions to have party skills (Surgery, Path Finding, Tactics etc) or should I do it myself since they get +3 bonus at level 10 if I do it myself?

So how am I supposed to start off in sandbox viking conquest? I can't recruit dudes from villages without renown and hiring mercs from taverns is too expensive.

Purely for winning and ramping up quickly, 27 Int is strongest build. You can start the game INT while you establish your powerbase (establish enterprises everywhere for income, leveling up, leveling companions up, kissing up and making friends with lords). From there you can split into CHA so that your armies are cheaper, and it's easier to keep their morale up and field larger enemies.
My current game I started with some strength just to make leveling easier, but that's up to you.
If you go INT, still dedicate 1 or two companions to party skills that aren't as important but that you want (spotting, first aid, maybe tracking, some more training).
Personally I focused on Training, path-finding, and surgery.

It really depends on how you want to play. If you don't expect to fight at all or risk yourself in battle, go all-in on the party skills yourself. I generally prefer to keep several companions as INT bitches and maybe go to 5 in a few party skills for +2 on the specialists. The main INT skill you should invest in is maybe Trainer, because at mid-late game you will be the highest leveled character in your party most likely, so that means your trainer skill will always benefit.

It also depends on what your party layout is, but you should usually have a scout specialist and a medical specialist. This will keep your party mobile, aware, and alive and healthy. Other INTbitches can specialize in side stuff like Engineer, Trainer, Looting, and be secondary medics and scouts if needbe. INTbitches should be near the back of your party, and given good crossbows, and they make a solid rally/fallback line in combat. This keeps them safer but gives them combat experience opportunities.

Usually I wind up with 10 companions (8 you can have clean, balancing morale you can usually manage 10 if you're careful), and I'd say 2-3 of them are INTbitches of some kind (always at the back), 4 are pure combat vanguard warriors, and the rest are mixed (generally combat but could be secondary party-skill people). For example with the mixed, Klethi is good as a fighter but she is also easy to keep as a backup scout or a looter.

Honestly, I would say just use beginner recruiting so you don't have to deal with earning 150 renown (and keep a good relationship) just to recruit normally.
