Back on the Rocks is one of the few Eurobeat songs that actually has coherent lyrics. It's also one of the best songs.

My biggest gripe about Eurobeat is how some of the later songs (especially the ones that do wind up on Initial D) have that "obviously written to ride off Inisharu Dee" tone to them. It's hard to explain, usually with lyrical motifs focusing about cars, speed, or being a hero, and with the eurobeat sounding as "wacky as possible". Like they're becoming parodies of themselves.

I definitely agree with that. Super driver and GAS GAS GAS aren't bad, but other songs like Takumi, Speed car, etc. just don't stack up to the other Eurobeat out there.

The thing that made older Eurobeat so unusual was the fact that, well, they were otherwise just random songs. They don't even fucking talk about discos in the newer ones!

I think one of the big draws of Eurobeat is that even the slow songs are uptempo and fast-paced. The lyrics have never really been a concern of mine, but you can definitely see a quality gap between original songs and songs written for a specific purpose (I.e. Initial D) not just in terms of lyrics, but the music accompanying the vocals as well.

One semi-related note: are Discoteks even a thing anymore in Europe?

I definitely know what you mean. And the weird thing is the older shit like Beat of the Rising Sun, Night of Fire, Heartbeat, they all go great with the show and have nothing to do with racing or dorifto.

The later songs were made for it and sound really weird, almost like 2000's pop rock whereas the older songs sounded like proper 80's disco. The lyrics seem superficial aswell, not that I'm listening to Eurobeat for the lyrics, but the older shit definitely had that meme connection between man and machine.
