But we will only get the Zabuza arc from that potential remake, user

BinaryMan

He wanted to stop at Zabuza?

SniperGod

No, editors forced him to do tornament style arc early, so we got the Chunnin Exams.

King_Martha

They just made him rush into it then? I'm sure he would have gotten around to it because it's a fucking action battle shonen, got to have a tournament arc eventually.

Snarelure

Yeah, but Kishimoto wanted to have more arcs before the Chuunin Exam to actually show Team 7 BEING a team, but the editors said no.

Firespawn

I wouldn't say "forced", but it was heavily suggested.

CodeBuns
CodeBuns

Well that sounds perfect then. Looking back i think the Chuunin Exams were a bit early, that whole thing started as soon as they got back from Zabuza, right? I'd like to see more of team 7 actually becoming a real team.

Or hell maybe even being friends for fucks sake like we're supposed to believe. A little time with the other cells would have been great too.

StonedTime
StonedTime

That's what Kishimoto wanted to do, but his editors pressured him into running the Exams early. As a result, we don't really feel like Team 7 is a team, just a mishmash of people who hate each oher.

then the bell test, where 'teamwork' translated into 'giving a retard some food', apparently
oh, and when the two boys nearly fucking killed each other on top of a fucking hospital
and remember when Sasuke left the Village, knocked Sakura out and left her on a bench at midnight
and when Sasuke literally ripped a guy's arms out of their sockets
man we had some fun times, didn't we

If any of you were wondering what Boruto is saying in the trailer, someone did a translation. It's not much, just some more perspective and him shilling his own show.
Boruto: The modernization of the village of Konohagakure continues to advance, and it’s as peaceful as can be. Ninjas might not be needed in this age, but still, I decided to attend the ninja academy. But everyone only looks at me as the “Hokage’s son.” I’ll escape from that label as fast as you can blink and have everyone recognize me for who I am! This is my story! BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS begins airing on April 5 at 5:55 p.m.!

VisualMaster

Ninjas might not be needed in this age
Not when the average joe can load up a scroll in a wrist rocket and launch it anyone. And before 'well you still need a ninja to seal the scroll', they clearly came up with the technology to UNSEAL the scroll without being a ninja, so it's reasonable to assume there'd be a way to create a scroll without being a ninja.

Is it just me or was early Naruto just a bit too edgy? I mean, take the Chuunin Exams for example. Who'd condone such a thing as the fucking Forest of Death? The parents must be assholes. Furthermore, just look at the basket case that was Gaara. By all rights he should have been executed for his behavior, jinchuuriki or not.

At least nowadays when shit like that happens it seems deserved. Of course, I was too young to really think about this stuff when I was watching it, but looking back, my outlook has changed.

TalkBomber
TalkBomber

Is it just me or was early Naruto just a bit too edgy?
It was an excellent showing of what the universe was originally created to be - showing that even in times of 'peace' there were still child soldiers, combat and death.

Who'd condone such a thing as the fucking Forest of Death? The parents must be assholes.
The people who'd make Ryo hand over fist on it, I guess. I mean, nobody HAS to do it - the Genin know going in that they could die, it's why they all need waivers.

Furthermore, just look at the basket case that was Gaara. By all rights he should have been executed for his behavior, jinchuuriki or not.
I don't think anyone wanted to invade Sunagakure over something like that, especially considering the defences that Gaara had. He would've wiped out dozens of shinobi - BEFORE he went One Tailed Form. It just wouldn't be worth it.

PackManBrainlure
PackManBrainlure

They're the military.

executed
Gaara is a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't case. With the consideration that he's a walking WMD and that Suna depends on his continued existence for balance of power, and also the fact that since 4th Kazakage and 3rd Hokage is dead there's basically nobody capable of handling Gaara anymore?

RumChicken
RumChicken

I mean, nobody HAS to do it - the Genin know going in that they could die, it's why they all need waivers.
No offense, but they're like middle schoolers. I don't know if they're the most responsible.

VisualMaster
VisualMaster

None of that makes sense to me, user. Child soldiers only exist in the worst shitholes on the planet, they'd never be viable as any kind of long-term program. If they were going to have something like that, it should have been when they were older.

it's why they all need waivers
There's a reason we don't let kids enter into binding contracts. They have no idea what the fuck they're doing.

The Land of Waves made sense: it was an A-Rank mission disguised as a C-Rank. That was the entire point. But the Forest of Death was just fucking dumb.

As for Gaara, it doesn't matter. After causing that much senseless death he deserved to be put down. Letting him go because he dindu nuffin was stupid. If they wanted to make him a good guy later, they should have stepped it back a little with the violence.

haveahappyday
haveahappyday

there's basically nobody capable of handling Gaara anymore?
Naruto is.
Gaara stood down rather than fight Guy
Jiraiya spooked Itachi AND Kisame into fleeing rather than fighting
Tsunade would likely defeat Part I Gaara.

There's a large number of people who could if not kill, at least disable Gaara during Part I

Stark_Naked
Stark_Naked

They're the military
They're fucking 12.

Man, a lot of people were willing to join the evil guy who looks like a snake and sounds like a pedophile.

Anyway, it's funny because Sasuke didn't kill any of them. That's why his character was still somewhat likable before the Kage Summit Arc.

whereismyname
whereismyname

and that Suna depends on his continued existence for balance of power
Actually, they would have loved it if someone could off Gaara for them, given how often they'd tried and failed in the past.

VisualMaster
VisualMaster

And furthermore, the Forest was the only place where killing was condoned. Not in the first stage, and not in the preliminaries or finals. It could happen, but the teachers stepped in before it did. Hell, when Neji was about to kill Hinata, all of the Jonin jumped in to stop him.

The more I think of it, the more stupid it seems.

PurpleCharger
PurpleCharger

They're fucking 12.
What's your point?

Naruto is
Naruto is also a moralfag and Gaara dropped where nobody could recover him before Kankuro and Temari evac'd him.

Gai, Jiraiya, Tsunade
Tsunade was a drunken gambler at the time, I dunno where Jiraiya was and Gai was busy in the actual village.

Offing Gaara only makes sense when it's done within Suna so they can recover the 1-tails. If it were done within Konoha, Konoha would have two beasts and Suna would have zero.

AwesomeTucker
AwesomeTucker

I wonder if the parents had a say in it. I mean, the ones that HAD parents would likely impress upon them the importance and seriousness of it.

Child soldiers only exist in the worst shitholes on the planet
Like the entirety of the Narutoverse before Boruto, basically.

they'd never be viable as any kind of long-term program
I guess space magic changes that, especially when you have anomalies like Kakashi, Itachi, Zabuza, Madara, Sasuke, Naruto, Gaara, the list goes on.

They have no idea what the fuck they're doing.
Which is why it's up to the Jounin to put their name up. If the Jounin doesn't think they're ready, they can't even enter.

But the Forest of Death was just fucking dumb.
The only dumb part was putting people like Gaara in with the group, and also somehow completely missing Orochimaru.

After causing that much senseless death he deserved to be put down.
Reminder that Gaara was literally a tool and a weapon that was being ordered around by someone who wasn't even his dad, and he couldn't sleep for more than a few hours a night, every night of his life, because if he did he'd go ballistic and murder everything. If you're going to blame anyone, blame Rasa.

Anyway, it's not like the series has a history of punishing people because they do bad things
Hashirama just let Madara walk away after he explicitly states he's going to work against Konoha
Orochimaru is free
Kabuto runs an orphanage
Itachi was apparently never a bad guy at all
Sasuke. Enough said.
Obito
Nagato

Tsunade was a drunken gambler at the time, I dunno where Jiraiya was and Gai was busy in the actual village.
I didn't think you meant at the EXACT point Naruto beat Gaara. I thought you mean just after the Invasion after everything had calmed down.

StrangeWizard
StrangeWizard

The Forest is a live sim of what's going to happen. Remember that Chuunins are squad leaders. They're commissioned officers. We're looking at Lieutenants and Captains. Genin are basically NCOs and footsoldiers. Jounin are actual elites, they're the colonels and the lower generals, there's not supposed to be a lot of them.
Captains and Lieutenants you would imagine need to know how to fight in actual battles. The FoD exists as a way to simulate 'get information and get to the evac point'. You don't NEED to kill anyone, but nobody's going to stop you.

massdebater
massdebater

After the invasion Suna and Konoha were at peace, executing Gaara would require another declaration of war or some sort of elite hit squad going undercover.

TalkBomber
TalkBomber

Okay, stupid. I'm going to explain the "military" cycle for your typical genin. They start out as a literal child, around 6-8, and join the ninja academy. In the academy they learn the bare basics of being and ninja and become genin when they graduate.

Then, to pass into the NEXT FUCKING RANK above them they have a) complete some kind of written/mental test, b) survive a FUCKING FOREST OF DEATH despite being full-fledged ninjas for barely a year or so by now, and c) compete in a series of non-lethal (it can happen but it's discouraged) 1-vs-1 bouts. Those who meet the necessary criteria (which is stupid since even losers at this stage can get promoted) become Chuunin.

The Forest of Death should have been something that was required to become a Jonin. Giving kids such an obscenely dangerous challenge after a simple quiz is stupid and out of place.

Bidwell
Bidwell

Suna and Konoha were at peace
Only because Konoha basically said 'You're our vassal now - we fucking OWN you' and Suna just sort of shrugged and said "Yeah, that's fair"

Sir_Gallonhead
Sir_Gallonhead

stupid
Epic.

They start out as a literal child, around 6-8, and join the ninja academy. In the academy they learn the bare basics of being and ninja and become genin when they graduate.
Genin are just normal soldiers who do recon work, fetch quests and some light fighting against other genin-classes, so yeah.

Reminder that the Chuunin exams are not something you literally have to take, and that there were plenty of people who looked like they were in their twenties or late teens in that exam booth. Chuunin are already elites, Genin isn't some sort of shamefur dispray unless you're actually aiming for the top. Most of the entire village is going to be genin. Jounin? Jounin are the aces of the entire fucking country. Kakashi and Asuma are the best of the best. I'm not even sure how many jounin there are total in the village.

I mean yeah but at that point, killing Gaara is like shooting yourself in the foot. You do have people who are proven able to handle it, after all.

VisualMaster
VisualMaster

Like the entirety of the Narutoverse before Boruto, basically
Konoha was prosperous, get the fuck out.

If the Jounin doesn't think they're ready, they can't even enter
The exam, not the forest. My entire complaint is about the stupid forest.

Regardless, if Kishi were going to make Gaara a good guy, he shouldn't have went so far with the killing because it makes the character irredeemable.

applying real military categories to nardo
You have autism. Their chain of command has 4, maybe 5 positions, the gaps in skill between each being massive.

The FoD exists as a way to simulate 'get information and get to the evac point'
There are better ways to do it than a death forest.
but nobody's going to stop you
And that's the problem. Hell, your point of using the real world as an analogue is even more retarded because no sane military has a death forest or anything similar as a test to pass its training program.

DeathDog
DeathDog

Jounin are actual elites, they're the colonels and the lower generals
If Generals led green privates on the front lines.

b) survive a FUCKING FOREST OF DEATH despite being full-fledged ninjas for barely a year or so by now
Reminder that their Jounin decide if they're ready. If the Jounin doesn't think you're ready after four years, guess what, you're still a fucking Genin until your commander thinks you're ready. There were people in Naruto's Chuunin Exam who were fucking 30 years old or older

Supergrass
Supergrass

Gai's team took an extra year so they were ninja for 2 years. You can wait as long as you think you need.

JunkTop
JunkTop

Genin are just normal soldiers who do recon work
They chase cats. That's the typical mission befitting of a genin.

and that there were plenty of people who looked like they were in their twenties or late teens in that exam booth
Then have the age limit be, oh I dunno, 18 or so? Why does it have to be kids? Why the extreme leap in difficulty between the first and second rounds? Nobody died in the third round, and that's supposed to be the hardest.

It makes no sense.

StrangeWizard
StrangeWizard

Jounin are the aces of the entire fucking country. Kakashi and Asuma are the best of the best. I'm not even sure how many jounin there are total in the village.
How blessed were the main characters considering damn near every single member in the Konoha academy under Iruka's tutelage in the Naruto years went on to become Jounin.

kizzmybutt
kizzmybutt

Konoha was prosperous, get the fuck out.
And got invaded, attacked, or had an internal issue no less than SIX times before Boruto. NONE of which were during the Shinobi World Wars.

The exam, not the forest. My entire complaint is about the stupid forest.
The Jounin would know that the Forest makes up part of the Exam, and would be aware of it. Not to mention that clearly the Forest isn't in EVERY Exam, and the Jounins would be made aware of the Exam makeup before they submitted their Genin

Illusionz
Illusionz

Reminder that their Jounin decide if they're ready
For the exam as a whole. In fact, don't the tests change between each cycle to prevent cheating? Or do they repeatedly use the murder forest after cleaning the child skeletons out each time?

RavySnake
RavySnake

The exact tests change, but the Jounin would be aware of the layout before submitting their teams for the Exam. And even if they didn't know the details, they WOULD know that there would be live-fire combat, and would know if their team could handle it.

FastChef
FastChef

Yeah, but irreverent psychopaths like Kakashi might say you're ready when you're not. There should be an age limit.

And they didn't mention a thing to their genin beforehand, which either means they weren't aware, or they were and decided that these kids who'd spent the last few months catching cats and doing paper routes were ready. Furthermore, nobody's screened beforehand to make sure they aren't, oh, I don't know, FUCKING OROCHIMARU, or some other kind of psychopath - like Gaara.

The more and more I think of it the dumber and dumber it seems. Nothing else was like that in part 1.

Supergrass
Supergrass

If generals led
Well yeah that doesn't make much sense but then again their command structure doesn't really work in the way you'd expect an actual military to structure it.
Also, Chuunin are normal squad leaders, apparently, so I'm guessing most of the squads we see are just special cases. Gai and Genjutsu Jobber's team (the latter isn't even a legit Jounin) have hyuuga in them, Asuma leads the Ino-Shika-Cho, Kakashi leads the last Uchiha. You'd expect these teams to get special treatment.

Well those teams ARE special.

They chase cats. That's the typical mission befitting of a genin.
Chasing cats are miscellaneous requests for the greenest genin, you can easily take genin squads out for recon work as a chuunin, that's what chuunin do and genin follow. Obviously you can't do it on your own as a genin.

age limit
Why? A genin is a soldier. They and their officer are responsible for knowing what they can handle and backing out if it's too much.

first and second rounds
The first round was an exercise in information gathering. The second round was an exercise in live espionage against opposition squads and escape / stealth. The third round was just a plain bout under supervision so parties could display their skills fully in controlled settings. Battles, though, are not controlled settings.

PackManBrainlure
PackManBrainlure

Bidwell

Carnalpleasure

Gaara killed three rain chumps who were admittedly in the wrong place at the wrong time but were likely dicks anyway given how easily their leader took to lethal force, two guys that were hired to kill him, and one guy who sought him out to kill him

Nude_Bikergirl
Nude_Bikergirl

Just admit that the forest sucks and makes no sense as a method to train young ninja.

A genin is a soldier
A child soldier. This isn't Somalia. And most genin never even see combat, that's kind of the point. And if genin aren't barred from going on chuunin-level missions because of their squad leader, that's a mistake and needs to be changed.

The second round was an exercise in live espionage against opposition squads and escape / stealth
Where you can die and people can kill you with no recourse even though the entire thing is under surveillance. See the problem?

In fact, what do you think they do with all the child snuff films they record? Sell 'em on the shinobi black market?

Spamalot
Spamalot

Deadlyinx
Deadlyinx

or they were and decided that these kids who'd spent the last few months catching cats and doing paper routes were ready
Catching cats, doing paper routes, awakening the most OP eye power in the series at the time, and defeating a Kiri Hunter Killer (or someone on that level).

Furthermore, nobody's screened beforehand to make sure they aren't, oh, I don't know, FUCKING OROCHIMARU, or some other kind of psychopath - like Gaara.
Orochimaru clearly looked similar to the shinobi he murdered, and just stashed the bodies of the other two. As for Gaara, there would've been a fucking UPROAR if Naruto was able to enter but Gaara wasn't.

Yeah, Temari's just a big softie at heart.

Just admit that the forest sucks and makes no sense as a method to train young ninja.
putting soldiers through live fire exercises is a bad training method
People IRL get killed in training exercises, dude

And most genin never even see combat, that's kind of the point. And if genin aren't barred from going on chuunin-level missions because of their squad leader, that's a mistake and needs to be changed.
Then that Village that implements those rules is at an immediate disadvantage to those that don't, as that Village will receive less missions, make less money, and will have less soldiers to replace losses or should they come under attack

I'm trying to slot stuff into a modern military and it honestly isn't working very well, either way they're officers and need to earn their rank.
Chuunin are educated, right? There were all sorts of convoluted questions on the exam that chuunin supposedly knew how to solve. But we've never seen anything like Chuunin school.

Just admit that the forest sucks and makes no sense as a method to train young ninja.
It doesn't make sense, but not for the reasons you think. There's too much dropout, you can lose like 50% of the hopefuls. Then again though, the Chuunin exams are highly political in nature, they're like the Olympics but have a direct impact on your military might.

A child soldier. This isn't Somalia. And most genin never even see combat, that's kind of the point.
No, most NEW genin don't see combat. Genin are the faggots who follow chuunin into their missions. You can easily be a genin at 20.

And if genin aren't barred from going on chuunin-level missions because of their squad leader, that's a mistake and needs to be changed.
Why? Chuunin are LEADERS. Why would you send out a squad full of people qualified to lead instead of a squad of regular led by one qualified to lead unless you're trying to build some sort of strike team?

See the problem?
No.

sorry you sent your kid to grade 3, we conscripted him for military service and he got blown apart by a mortar

A fake one maybe. The only argument Konoha would have to make is that their jinchuuriki isn't an unstable nutball who killed scores of his own countrymen.

In the short-run, but they'll have more ninja who didn't die as children in the long-run. And then another 40% to giant snakes and dickbags from other villages who, since this is the time when villages were at each other's throats, would be encouraged to kill the other village kids to secure a future advantage in shinobi.

So not only is it stupid to have, it's even more stupid to leave unsupervised and invite the assholes from other villages to.

And this is in a village that seems to only have around a dozen new shinobi every generation.

Why would you send out a squad full of people qualified to lead instead of a squad of regular led by one qualified to lead unless you're trying to build some sort of strike team?
Because they shouldn't be supported by fucking children.

But to be fair, they kind of do that. Genin can only accept D and C-rank missions, while Chuunin can accept C and B-rank missions. To my knowledge a chuunin leader can't bring their genin squad on a B-rank mission.

Assume that their class had 30 students. That means that nearly two-thirds of the possible Genin from that year level alone chose - or weren't allowed to - enter.

I'm not asking for your personal values or your personal judgement of good or bad. If a soldier can't pull the trigger when he's needed to, then he's a poor soldier by definition. Now, whether or not the Chuunin exams is a place where it'd be good to, that's another argument.

Hiruzen had severe neglect issues with respect to Naruto despite being entrusted by his predecessor (and successor) but I don't see much else psychopathic out of him.

Just because Inojin might've been ALLOWED to kill the ninja he had by the throat doesn't mean he ABSOLUTELY HAD TO if he didn't feel he needed to. If he felt he had the shinobi subdued, and he didn't want to kill him, he wasn't forced to.

It was to the instructors, so yes, I am very real. Try again, dummy.
But it wasn't? The skills needed for those two tests are completely separate? You can't say you know what the instructors were looking for because it's a fucking fictional setting and you can't ask them.

Which is why adult Jounin need to make the decision to even allow them to take the exam haha. This is why I say you don't understand international politics. It's like how the Greek city states had a period where their 'wars' had death tolls of like 5% or the original intention of the Olympics, a location where you could compete and go to 'war' without actually going to war.

Why not just kill all the enemy kids in their sleep?
Because that is an act of war.

Not anymore, and I'm pretty sure we're to assume that the world Naruto takes place in is at least somewhat modern.
Evidently, the existence of the chuunin exams, the gokage, the by-selection appointment of the kage, the existence of the villages as mercenary camps, and so on show that you're fucking stupid because their world ISN'T 'somewhat modern'.

A third entering the exam with a death forest is still a lot of people to jeopardize pointlessly for political expediency.
But not everyone who enters dies. Not everyone who enters the Exams even MAKES it to the Second Exam. 51 teams (153 shinobi) entered the Exam, and only half of which passed. 26 teams (78 shinobi) took place in the Chuunin Exams, and we clearly see that not everyone who fails dies (we see the team open the scroll and get knocked unconscious, we later see Karin get saved by Sasuke, but she failed), so the number who die are probably usually pretty minor.

But you should, to maximize your chances of victory.

This literally isn't a fucking argument, are you trying to invoke CURRENT YEAR? It's why ninja do the chuunin exams. Death tolls in modern militaries are far fucking higher actually, because you have people to spare.

they didn't have death matches at the Olympics
Because the entire point of the Olympics was that they wanted a way to solve things without even the 5%. They didn't go to war for land after all for the most part, it was some sort of retarded prestige shit and a payment of gold so they figured that letting your best show off their martial-related skills, like running, spear throwing, and discus chucking was a good enough substitute. That's not the purpose of the chuunin exams, though.

Except there's a bunch of other contradictory information that suggests it is.
There ISN'T, that's the fucking problem and what I've been saying. You have this strange notion that technology = society when it simply isn't the case, especially in a setting with superpowers so that the ruling 'warrior caste' is far fucking stronger relative to the common farmer than even knights were relative to peasants. In such a setting, it's highly concieveable for feudalism / absolutism to persist strongly far past the invention of modern-ish technology.

To avoid things like torture, or a forest fire, or any other number of possible scenarios that can occur when you put six dozen children that can use space magic into a confined space for five days straight?

When I do something right and someone tells me it's wrong, I'll argument that it's important. But if it's actually wrong, but not important, I'll say it's not important.

To avoid things like torture, or a forest fire
I'd bet you money those things are allowed.

I'd have to say I'm happy that Boruto plans to start out lighthearted and happy with the kids going on fun ninja adventures, then get progressively darker and more serious as they get older.

You know, like real life.

Why would they allow torture if a team already captured the scroll off an enemy team? Within the context of the Exam, it serves no purpose. Why would they allow a wildfire to burn out of control, completely removing the 'Forest' from the Forest of Death and possibly killing 100% of the applicants?

Techpill

Why would they allow torture if a team already captured the scroll off an enemy team?
You didn't specify. I thought you meant torture to obtain information on the location of a scroll, which is the only real reason you'd use torture unless you're a sadistic fuck.

Why would they allow a wildfire to burn out of control
Because the team who started it could collect scrolls in the chaos and confusion. Also, they allow fireballs to be thrown around (thanks, Sasuke) and you'd think a few of those and the whole place would go up like a tinderbox. Not to mention all of the paper bombs and shit.

It's shown that several shinobi clearly are just that fucked in the head

Because the team who started it could collect scrolls in the chaos and confusion.
And then die? Or burn down the tower? Or remove the Forest itself?

Also, they allow fireballs to be thrown around (thanks, Sasuke) and you'd think a few of those and the whole place would go up like a tinderbox. Not to mention all of the paper bombs and shit.
You'd need something more than Sasuke-tier fireballs, but it wouldn't be hard.

I remember thinking the show was going to end up with them all dealing with the death of their comrades on realistic missions involving infiltration and espionage and the like. Them being trained early to deal with death made sense when it seemed like the show was going in a direction that could be taken a bit more seriously. So looking back after how goofy it got, it does make it have an awkward contrast.

For a second I thought you said smelly.

What do you think Hinata smells like after a long mission, haha. Especially since she probably has to sleep near Akamaru, haha.

Inmate
Inmate

ninjas probably wash as much as they can on long missions, but all the running, fighting and outdoors can lead to some smelly situations no doubt, and thats before having a big-ass dog hanging around too.
Hina would start out smelling fresh and sweet, and as the mission drew out, she'd get sweaty and hot and sticky, which isn't very attractive (unless you're into that sorta thing)

the range of missons is endless, even if only given the lower-ranking ones. Some more team strategy development from Kishi would've been cool, but there was a lot of filler in the anime that sorta covered that anyway.

I've always liked her manga design, it's cute. Only difference is the shirt instead of bandages wrapped around her chest. Mitsuki has his manga outfit, too, with the extra black-and-yellow strap going around his belt and hanging off a little. Bort's oversized belt is there too.

All-in-all I'd say SP did a good job striking a balance between the chapter 700 and manga designs.
