I don't think Nintendo anticipated Splatoon to be a successful game to begin with, they probably only planned to support it for a year before moving on. It was a new IP, depended on a community of online players, and was released on a console that wasn't selling, not exactly a good combination for success. Since it became a hit and Nintendo wants to pretend the Wii U never happened, I'm expecting the sequel to receive a lot more attention than its predecessor.

Nintendo have said the Switch is not a successor to the 3DS, but they've also said the same thing about the DS and GameBoy. As far as Nintendo is concerned, Switch is not successor to the DS until it succeeds on the market.

It seemed like such a waste to not be able to play against octolings when they were already part of the campaign.

Dev time I guess? Passable bot ai isn't an insignificant task, especially given that the most important behaviour is something they'd have to invent pretty much from scratch.

those weren't just claims, a whole lawsuit happened and is the very reason they shut down swapnote.

It just seems like such a wasted opportunity, they did all this worldbuilding and built a half-finished third person shooter around it.

It doesn't even seem like splatoon2 will fix any of the flaws of the first, it's literally more of the same, with paid online.

Pretty sure making the gameplay mechanics took more effort than a run of the mill worldbuilding with barely any characters and all lore told through some scrolls.

But the bare minimum would just be online matches and nothing else, meaning no splatfests at all. Most online games don't have anything beyond regular multiplayer matches.

i think he means adding new content semi-regularly, which is something that's considered normal in most multiplayer centric games these days

They did, the game had constant updates, and free too, usually maps on other games are paid dlc. Including game modes. Then again Splatoon had very little content at launch.

I've actually never squid squadded with anyone in this game. My S-Rank has been achieved through just random matchups

The feeling I get from the story of the game's development makes me think that Nintendo had very little faith in this game and was really just throwing their younger developers a bone. Then suddenly it blew up and actually managed to move their dying console.

I don't remember the timeline exactly, but I feel like there wasn't much marketing until the testfire hit. Maybe they noticed people going nuts about it and decided to throw some budget around.

Well for one thing, the Wii U was lacking in games. Also, much of the more intense marketing came after the positive reception to the first versions of the game and even after its release. You can also kind of thank Shigeru Miyamoto for Callie and Marie since he told the developers that if they couldn't come up with marketable characters for the game, he would put Mario in it.

To be fair, there is sometimes a method to Shiggy's madness. Nintendo owes a lot to the recognizable nature of its "brand" which is due to its slew of heavily marketed Nintendo characters from various franchises. as fun as Splatoon is in its core gameplay, I feel like we wouldn't be talking about it as much if there was no lore.

Also, the final Splatfest was a big deal because of the emotional investment everyone had in their favorite squid sister, which Nintendo realized was probably the primary motivation for most people's decisions during Splatfests

One of the biggest questions after the Splatoon 2 trailer also was "Where's Callie/Aori?"

Ever since the first Splatfest I always treated it as Callie vs Marie. I was also in the top 100 for the Splatfests that had leaderboards. For team Marie of course.

Honestly, I haven't seen that much actual Squid Sisters porn relative to the amount of Splatoon porn there is. And the ratio of all ages doujinshi to ero-doujins seems pretty balanced compared to other franchises. And I mean actual porn, not just slightly ecchi artwork

I think the fact that Callie is no where to be seen in the trailer has made her fans panic and become a loud minority. Marie fans know she's alive and well, so they remain quiet. Personally I'm wondering why she seems so pensive in the trailer.

Splatoon generals have been on life support since Splatfests ended last year. Right now we're just waiting for Splatoon 2 to come out so we have something to play and talk about again.

We're mostly just treading water waiting for the sequel out at the moment. I don't know how big Splatoon is compared to other generals, considering the Wii U isn't a huge console, but it had like a 50% attach rate.

does the new hub look kinda small?
i know the plaza was kinda empty, but it was really big, and a perfect place for the sisters to perform

maybe live performances have been cut to condense the hub area

Looks about the same size floor space wise to me, but much less open in terms of the layout, especially with all the vertical architecture leaning in.

They haven't been shown what's behind the camera yet, and Crusty Sean's food truck is around somewhere. I think we've only seen a fraction of Inkopolis Square so far.
