i have a feeling that designers in the 90's worked off the designs from SEGA, and that's how they interpreted the 2D into cartoony-3D.
It's a lot easier to draw then full 3D "plump spikes" sanic-head too.

My problem was less the romance shit, and more the fact that they intentionally used Sally as a death device to draw Sonic being scared and OOC. That's probably why they gave her proper weapons in the reboot.
I DID kind of like the stakes pre-reboot, where they weren't actually afraid to nearly kill people off. It kind of really hammered shit in, because if motherfucking SONIC is scared and upset, there's definitely a problem. So far the highest we've gotten was Panic In The Sky, where Nicole died for like 10 seconds and then didn't (though I'm still pretty damn convinced Phage took her place).

I guess Sanic Team thought they were gonna be a big thing. I never saw anyone wearing them, and i used to hang out at skate parks 'n shit so guess they didn't take off in europe much.
It was a good reason to shoehorn in the new grind mechanic though, so props to sega for that.
i had a few soaps way back when. they were fun and i remember setting up a mini grindpark in my backyard, but no one else used them. kind of a shame they never really took off.

Remeber, Sonic Adventure had shooty stages playing as Gamma. Tails and Eggman are just offshoots of that gameplay.

New sexy engine that can handle the fast with no frame drops
Re-done levels with as much new areas as possible
Story that merges from 1 into 2 seamlessly, adding a middle bit between stories if needed.
All the stuff the fans want and more - super sonic playable, different outfits for the girls, chao gardens, etc
It might take a while, but they'd make all the money.
