If the South had won, they would have become the shittiest country ever. The North, though humiliated, would have continued to develop and industrialize while the Confederacy would have stagnated due to having a slave-based economy. The rebels who fought for the confederacy were duped into risking their lives to support the interests of a small slave-owning elite. No, the Northern states were not pure or innocent either, but they had an industrialized economy and that's what America needed for economic growth, not slavery.

These happened because the North took the only economy that the South had (plantations that worked on slave labor) and the North knew that without giving the South some kind of economic stablity, they would crash and become an economic vacuum.
