Seems Arthur had to kill proto beast when it was at its weakest basically, which seems to be the case for all beasts to date. You can't just kill one outright, they have to be at their weakest with a dozen things working against them, and you need some kinda miracle on your side. Once its heads formed and potnia therom took place he wouldn't stand a chance.
