They've been working on it on the back end. The big thing is that they're in the process of rebalancing gear right now. Their internal statistics are showing that gear is having an active impact on matches, and that's never been the intention.

And upgrading gear is a necessity in 4v4 and that costs several thousand per character

You can literally get revenge several times in 1v1 fights and two shot people in revenge mode, while being an unkillable tank in revenge thanks to revenge mode defense.
And those are just the revenge stats, there are other stats like attack, defense, stamina cost reduction, stamina regen, exhaustion recovery, that make a MASSIVE difference.
