All of them

It is better to die for the Emperor

than to live for yourself.

Augustus
Aurelian
Vespasian

Aurelius is overrated because muh philosopher king. His reign was a fairly troubled one and he did well to not let things fall apart but there were far better emperors.

Augustus Is a title not a name

Peter the Great.

Augustus was Octavian's agnomen. It only became a title much later.

If he just said 'Julius Caesar' then you'd think the wrong one because you're an idiot and don't realize the first Caesar was not an emperor and the first that was emperor was his adopted son who took his name.

Augustulus, duh.

You may be trying to sound smart but in fact you come across like a pretentious twat.

Augustus was an agnomen granted to him by the Senate and its from that name that the rank came from later in the Empire, under Diocletian I believe.

Augustus
Tiberius
Aurelian
Hadrian
Vespasian
Domitian

He defeated the Germanic tribes and gave Rome another decades of respite but part of his legacy is tarnished by the fact that Commodus was his successor. Aurelian was better, the dude defeated the breakaway Gallic and Palmyrene Roman Empires, united Roman Empire again, dealt with Gothic and Vandal raiders, reorganized the Empire's borders and adjusted its size to keep the Roman state more coherent and centralized.

>He defeated the Germanic tribes and gave Rome another decades of respite
Is that why his son kept on fighting germans for another decade after acceding to the throne?

Anastasius
Heraclius
Leo III
Basil I
Basil II
Alexius I Komnenos
John II Komnenos
Manuel I Komnenos

Somebody?

>Heraclius

...

He was able to repel them completely out of Italy, mate. That's a major thing. The Macromanni and Alemanni were raiding deep in Northern Italy, it was a huge concern for the Roman people.

Wasn't Trajan given the title Maximus on account of him being regarded as twin best with Augustus?

They manage one raid as far as Aquileia before getting rekt by Pompeianus. Most of the fighting happened between Noricum, Pannonia and the Balkans.

Hercalius is only bad if you haven't read history, and think Wikipedia battle images are cool. Heraclius saved the empire *TWICE* from a situation where any other empire would have fallen.

Augustus

Also he started the progression towards the Themes (No, he didn't invent the system entirely. It was a gradual progress) which saved the Empire like 5000 times in the future.

Easy peasy, Augustus.

Heraclius was incapable of dislodging Shahrabaraz, the famous Sassanid general, from Egypt and the Levant even after the war ended "officially" in 629 AD. He had to levy economic aid and recognition of Shahrabaraz as the new Sassanid ruler while civil war for the Sassanid crown as going on.

Heraclius is being a bit over-inflated here.

Jesus Christ

And yet all of us including you knew exactly which emperor he was referring to, so why be a pedant?

Fuck off Gaius, that eastern mystery god you love so much was never the emperor.

but he was the son of god ;^)

>Heraclius was incapable of dislodging Shahrabaraz, the famous Sassanid general, from Egypt and the Levan
? Heraclius absolutely crushed Shahrabaz in Anatolia, which led to him being able to devastate the Sassanid homeland until they willingly sued for peace. Why would Heraclius tried to attack Egypt and Levant, when better options were available?

Heraclius was handed a war where the Sassanids occupied all of the eastern provinces, and almost all hope was lost. He ended the war as the one who was imposing peace terms on the Sassanids. After that, he managed to withstood an assault that destroyed the Sassanids and started the system that would ensure the empires survival.

Actually I have a coin that says Caesar is the son of god. Hail Sol Invictus/Jupiter.

(+ he had to fight the Avars in the west. He quite literally fought a two front war, where the other front was hopeless and came up on top)

You are going to lurk moar next time, aren't you?

Sharabaraz was in Egypt. And Heraclius couldn't even take Ctesiphon, the bridges had been severed and he had no siege engines to attack the Sassanid citadel walls. What are youe ven talking about.

The Sassanids were fighting a two-front war as well. The Goturks were employed in three separate consecutive wars during the war of 602-629 in the East at the same time the Persians were fighting the Byzantines and their allies in the West.

>Heraclius absolutely crushed Shahrabaz
>en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Sarus
What? They fought only once and it was a draw more or less. After that, Shahrabaraz was ordered to split his army with another general, Shahin, and circumvented around Heraclius's main force to siege Constantinople. After that, they never fought again and the main reason the war ended was because the Persian ruler tried to have Shahrabaraz executed by sending a messenger to his subalterns and telling the next Sassanid commander to take command. When the Byzantine forces intercepted it (although its been believed more recently by both Greek and Persian historians that it was likely a forgery invented by Heraclius), Heraclius showed it to Shahrabaraz who withdrew from the war, leaving Khosaru with no army after the final reinforcements were beaten outside Ctesiphon.

And the deperature of Persian troops from Egypt was in July 629, the peace treaty between Heraclius and Kavadh II was signed in September 628. Almost a year between the war's end, and Shahrabaraz forces leaving the Roman Levant and Egypt in mid-July 629.
