Down shifting through every gear while coming to a stop light

>down shifting through every gear while coming to a stop light

It makes you think you're a racing driver for a few seconds
(I am guilty of doing this once)

>things you do when you're 16 and severely autistic

>this how autocucks think manual transmissions are like

sometimes you want to have a little fun and practice your heel toe

>trusting your synchro rings
cuck spotted

>not kicking down the gears while coming to a stop

What is the correct way to come to a stop in a manual transmission vehicle?

Pull the e-brake

Shift to neutral if you're going to stop for sure. But manualcucks will complain that it'll eat up your brakes.

I do this all the time because it's fun and good practice plus if the light ends up turning I'm already in gear and can go right away vs having to pick a gear based on my speed and the rev match into it to not rape my synchros.

In that case you really don't have much of a choice.

Don't autos eat up the brakes then too, or is it worse?

And then you get tboned and die, because you're too impatient to relax for two seconds.

energy gets soaked into the transmission and engine until the torque converter disengages. you can do the same with a manual, but you have to downshift to prevent stalling and to keep resistance up

>tboned at a green light

cmon man
It was going to happen either way if it was.
Stop derping.

I do this while having the clutch fully depressed. It's how I was taught but then I see videos of people driving and they throw it into neutral and coast with just their brakes

So I'm a bit conflicted

In my gf's Ford focus, I usually shift down to 2nd or 3rd before going to neutral. Going from 4th to neutral would be stupid.

It's good if you are going down a hill with a corner.

There are 2 ways
1. you shift to neutral and just coast to a stop
2. Downshift through the gears until you stop
People will tell you #1 is not safe because of traffic/people never know what will happen incase you need to move your car suddenly. Then for #2 people will tell you you're wearing out your clutch wasting more gas etc.
It all depends on the situation how well you know the roads you'll have to decide which way is better

Nice to see you're still sucking cocks after all these years OP. Keep it up.

Also, why do you hate fun?

>stop and wait watching drunk fly through intersection
>live
>downshift so that you can blitz the intersection with .001 reaction time
>die

I just go from 4th to n then 1

I always downshift into the direct lower gear, then drop to neutral. It's cool and makes me look like a dickhead when I rev match.

Alright. No one should ever go through an intersection at any time because the threat of an insane drunk speeder is always present.
Sell your car, quit your job, and never leave your room in fear of the omnipresent speeding drunk driver. But make sure you place concrete barriers around the walls of your house, the drunk speeder could drive into your walls and collapse the house onto you.

Brakes are easier and cheaper to replace than a clutch.

>Red light approaching.
>You have watched and know it will turn green relatively soon.
>Downshift to 3rd 100-200 meters/yards out, zero throttle.
>Slow down enough that you hit the green just so that you are at ~2000 rpm and 3 car lengths behind the car ahead when they accelerate to your speed.
>Drive normally, having never braked or dropped below 20 mph, when normies would have just braked to a stop behind the vehicle ahead of them.

feelsgoodman.

I'm no psychologist, but I'm sure this is a phalacy. It's proven millions of times over that it's safer to wait before entering an intersection, rather than dropping the hammer the second it goes green. That doesn't equal your bullshit shitpost of never driving again. It just means that your argument of downshifting so you can get the jump on a green light isn't a safe idea. Now, unironically, literally kill yourself.

hate when the wheels lock up when i put it into first

>I still do this at every light
>I'm 30 and drive a v8 dohc with standard 6spd gearbox
>Is it cringeworthy?

No but it seems extremely tiresome, especially when you have 6 gears.
Speed limitations in my country are 30-50-90 km/h and I'm so lazy that I skip the 3rd and the 5th all the time even to accelerate, so let alone engine braking.

>he doesn't slow down by sticking in first and engine breaking down to the desired speed

Plebs, the lot of you.

If you're downshifting properly clutch wear should be negligible, just like upshifting.
The wear argument is weak in both directions. Cars are machines, machines require maintenance.

I'd rather die a man than live a cuck.

I'll downshift through to third, my ECU does not fuel cut for 2nd and 1st so I'll just push push the clutch in till I come to a stop once I'm to slow for third. If I'm first at the light or stop I'll put it in first with clutch in. If I'm 2nd I'll put it in neutral with clutch out.

>Downshift from 3rd to 2nd
>wtf this fag downshifts every gear

Kys

>when some cuck in a cuckmobile aka GTI thinks he's got some sort of exotic because he's got a dct and exhaust so it backfires when he downshift through each gear to a stop

>phalacy
>I'm no psychologist
lol no shit

It's good for getting to know what gears for what speeds, it's how I learnt manual. Driving my own car now I definitely don't do it though

If you need to hit the gas for safety reasons you got nothing

Downshift through every gear. It's literally the law if you're a CDL commercial driver: you can't coast more than the length of your vehicle out of gear and must stay at an rpm range you can accelerate in.

You could also leave it in whatever gear you were in and push in the clutch only when the rpms come down to idle.

>engine braking to a stop with a line of cars behind you

I do this every time.

>Phalacy
I'm no psychologist, but I'm pretty sure you're a fag.

Some people would rather replace their clutch and their brake pads. Got to preserve those 20 dollar pads.

>perfectly matched downshifts burn up the clutch

If anything, it increases wear on the drive wheel tires. Now, if you're not rev matching, a) you're an imbecile, and b) git gud

I sometimes leave the clutch pulled in and mash all the gears down while rolling with the rest momentum

>money shift from 6th to 2nd

My auto downshifts while braking
never goes into neutral

so your saying rev matching a downshift where the clutch and engine engage smoothly is worse than a single takeoff of slipping the clutch 500 rpm?

>not staying in the power band at all times.

>tfw motorcycle with slipper clutch
>tfw this is standard procedure
>tfw when you time it right you can take off again in just the right gear and then clutchless upshift back up to where you were

It's so fun. You don't understand how fun it is just for the vroom noises.

VRRRRRM
VRRRRRRRRRM
VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrm
vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRM-RRRRRRRRM-RRRRRRRRRRM

vrrrrr vRRRRMm VRrrrmmmm VRRRMMMM VrRRRRRmmmmmmmmm

>coasting in neutral

if you have a manual car sell it immedietly before you kill someone

I love the slipper clutch on my bike.. oh a light up ahead.. stomp stomp stomp stomp WHEEEE on the clutch. No thinking, no gas.. just stomp down and let er rip.

This. It feels so good

>I have never driven manual
kek

Not even a robot can perfectly time their revs. Everytime you press the clutch you are wearing it. Its physics and you are a fucking moron for burning up your clutch over your brake pads. But hey, its your money. Waste it however it pleases you.

It's not even fucking close. I drove my truck 180k miles before I replaced the clutch, and even then I only replaced it to sell it to a friend rather than because it needed it and I downshift 90% of the time.

>not even a robot

You do realize that is exactly what flappy paddle gearboxes do on downshift as well as Nissan with their rev match on the manual in the 350/370.

Have you ever even driven manual before, fag?

yar , to maintain constant control.
never know when you may need to be instantly in gear with power as opposed to putting it in the right gear then applying power those 2 seconds can get you killed.
learn to drive kid.
or die.

Those arnt robots dealing with only the feedback from the engine via foot peddles and tac. But hey, its your 8 hour or 1000 dollar clutch job, not mine. Do what you want.

Might as well not fucking drive because you never know when a terrorist is going to allah akhbar at your car

>don't use your car you'll wear it out

If you wanted less wear you should have bought a torque converter, not a clutch

>8 hour 1000 dollar

More like you never know when you'll have to swerve becaue it's a safer or more possible option than braking. Such things generally require power to the wheels. Go ahead and swerve while coasting. Not fun.

>I could wear out this part thats made to be worn out by operating my car the smart and intended way and replacing a disposable part invented and refined to be cost effective.
>NAH FUCK IT! Ill use the part buried deep in the power train just because its cool!

Rev match downshifting is intended use and the estimated lifespan of your clutch takes it into account.

The amount of heat and slippage you cause doing it is NEXT TO FUCKING NOTHING. And if it really bothers you, get a grabbier clutch so it really doesn't slip and just locks up your wheels instead.

>More like you never know when you'll have to swerve becaue it's a safer or more possible option than braking. Such things generally require power to the wheels. Go ahead and swerve while coasting. Not fun.

>drives a 8 ton rusting cuck truck with q-tips pushing onto quarters for brakes

no wonder you need to stay on power.

No, its not. Keeping the car in gear until its nessisary to shift is intended use. Pressing the break to slow the car is intended. If it was intended, then they woudnt bury the clutched between the transmission and the engine. You should never own anything but an automatic, but you would probably fuck that up to.

I brake and then downshift? Is this bad? Can someone explain what im doing wrong?

you should downshift while braking to be able to get on power as soon as you're finished braking. Your car should always be either WOT, full brakes or turning. Coasting is just precious time being wasted.
In traffic tho who the fuck cares.

>car

I often coast in 5th until low on the tach, then drop to neutral and brake the rest of the way because I can't be arsed. Rev-match and accelerate as appropriate if a full stop doesn't occur.

If conditions are shit (snow/ice, excessive sand/gravel) and/or I'm on a hill/grade I'll downshift through the gears for safety in the former case and to save the brakes a bit in the latter.

>motorcycle

Downshifting every time because lol sequential gearbox and lol clutch and throttle are both hand controls rather than leg/foot. Piss easy and precise. 1st gear is like 3x wider than in my car but I still drop to neutral from 2nd (it's actually a half-click between 2nd and 1st so I'm not skipping a gear anyway) rather than bothering with 1st if I'm rolling to a full stop.

>car should always be either WOT, full brakes or turning
This is what boyracers actually believe

Wait....so that isn't how it works?!?!?!?

This is the proper way to stop a manual car in traffic :)

It is though. When I see a red light I just coast for some time to save fuel then downshift to engine brake. 7 times out of 10 I don't even need to come to a full stop before the light turns green and people in front start moving again.
Pretty efficient if I do say so myself.

No. You can go from 5th to 1st if you like. It's what your supposed to do. If you're coming off a dual carriageway (highway) and onto a slip road or something you don't go through the gears. You just get down to the required speed and then drop into the required gear. (usually 2nd or 3rd

>carriageway
Are you Australian or something mate? Even the Brits don't call it that

Yes the Brits do call it that, considering I am British. It's called a dual carriageway

Im agreeing with you, i do the same.

I'm guilty of this, the idea behind this is that you can immediately set off in the right gear whenever the stop light goes green.

>If you're coming off a dual carriageway (highway) and onto a slip road or something you don't go through the gears.
That's literally the most common and easiest way to explain the importance of being able to downshift, and you think that's not when you should down shift.
Slowing down in top gear then trying to feel out what gear you want and what RPM to be in is terrible. when making a right turn off a highway, I heel toe all the way down to second to blast it while merging onto the surface street. Slowing down, clutching in and trying to guess what gear and revs to be at right before I go is absolutely retarded.

Not sure what kind of car you drive but putting in a clutch shouldn't be an 8 hour job.
It also is a once in a cars lifetime job. If you're competent, buy your car new, and use it as a road car in an average density area you can easily take your car to 200k without replacing the clutch.
Clutches are wear items, but they're not high wear items. The only people replacing clutches multiple times in a cars life and either hoons, or imbeciles.

How is it hard to understand what gear you should be in? If I come off the dual carriageway onto a 30 MPH slip road then I will want to be in 3rd gear once I reach 30 MPH

>Slowing down, clutching in and trying to guess what gear and revs to be at right before I go is absolutely retarded.

Why though?

>go down to required speed without stalling

How

You lose sensation of speed after being on a highway
Third would also be very low power at 30mph by American car standards, so by your dumpy 1.2 liter diesels you'd be dangerously slow.
Taking the merge turns at 30mph would also likely be way too fast.
You also still have no idea what revs to be at. Even with hundreds of thousands of miles on the car, you won't be accurate taking that shot in the dark.
So you can just downshift like a normal human, or gear jam like you and let the clutch suffer.

You can easily drive 20mph in 5th gear.

You cannot accurately and consistently complete a rev match.

Do you think we're all retards or something? I know from my car, from the speed and from the sound what gear to be in, and I don't even have a rev-o-meter. Forgive me for saying this, but how hard can it be?

The brake?

I honestly don't know how to convince you. Considering I did exactly this today on my way home. 70 MPH road down to a 20 MPH sliproad, straight from 5th to 2nd and away down the slip road

This is why I'll never drive stick, too much shit can go wrong and I can't afford to fix a car that much

Autos are also cheaper and in better shape on the used market as well

You should stop doing that. Only put it into first when you come to a stop. Downshifting into 1st is almost never necessary

Sounds like you're the guy who downshifts with his clutch rather than his throttle.
That's fine, it's not correct, but the wear isn't huge or anything.
Lots of people can't admit when they're wrong, and I know I'm guilty of it too.
I saw all my friends deny it too when we were younger, they'd get defensive about not rev matching calling it stupid, saying you don't need to.
Then of course years later they would start to finally do it and pretend like they were never defending the other position.
It's really just a measure of car enthusiasm.

My car's owner manual says nothing of the sort

You're just one autist on the internet who thinks pulling the clutch plates apart and then putting them back together will destroy them.

Think about it. You're just shifting EARLIER, since you were slowing down anyways.

It doesn't matter. The clutch will easily survive over 100k miles of inaccurate shifts, and then you buy a new one for $500 and put it in in literally one evening.

t. 150k mile corolla on the original clutch

$500 is a life ruining amount

I mean. I've never rev matched once. It never seemed essential to me. I just slow the car down and throw it into the gear needed. Might not be the most elegant way but it gets the job done

Maybe for poor people

Are you fucking kidding me m8

I have a dedicated car/bike maintenance account with $8k in it and I deposit $50 a month. It's for everything from fucking tires to brakes to chains to belts to a jug of clean gas because I forgot the stabilizer last winter, and you know what? I break even by the end of the year, every year.

Why $8k? For the ultimate maintenance. Buying a new shitbox if need be.

okay mister who can't think about 2 things at a time

glad that you drive an auto so you can think about big black cocks fucking your women while you drive to your cuckshed

btw revmatching becomes a muscle memory, you don't even need to think about
