One quest has some scientist heading a secret movement where they began having children before the initiative's situation had stabilized. They provided for themselves by secretly stealing supplies from the outposts/nexus using stolen emergency tech. NPCs explain her stupidity away using the "She's always been quirky :^)" excuse. Ryder can only comment positively on the whole thing.

I thought it was funny too. We certainly don't have research centers in the coldest ass ends of the earth, occupied by researchers that stay up there for years or anything. Hell, they were, maybe they finished it, so perhaps were, built one specifically to deal with the ice and snow snow covering their research centers entirely preventing them from getting in/out. I remember reading an article on how it was one of the biggest hurdles, not the temperature itself because even the stations they were replacing had solved the temperature issue long ago.

My guess is he gets so obsessed with the geth and reapers that his wife leaves. What else would make your high-up military wife leave, besides cheating?
