Next time make it a week long.

Changed the tile spawners so they're at the edge now + did some wacky material for now, added selection visuals (yellow) and fixed multiselection, deletion, and some other minor bugs + refined rings, connection and debugged the UI a bit.

GMS1 was extremely usable even with the free version limitations. I haven't looked into GMS2 because I will be using 1 until I finish my current project (AKA for the rest of my forseeable future).

That's exactly why I suggest making it a week long. So that we have a weekend, or two weekends depending on how you set it up, plus one week of weekdays to make a game.

Hue I made them spawn fire for testing but fire hurts everyone it touches, so they just keep doing this until they die.

I've been a longtime lurker on this general and I'm finally coming close to finishing my first game. It's a android app called Bricktionary where it's similar to Pictionary where one user is the artist and other players have to guess the word they are representing but rather than being able to draw, the artist has to manipulate randomly-chosen shapes as a fun challenging twist. How's it sound?

Pic is a demo of the game screen (though the UI isn't finalized and obviously the word will be hidden from non-artists)

I'd assume simplistic meant a proverbial brown cylinder and green sphere. Try adding some AO and random variety, right now it's a mirror image, which is not good on the eyes.

Not that simplistic but close. Just a simple trunk made out of a subdivided square and leaves are just a bunch of planes cobbled together.
No clue how AO works but I'll look into it.
Gonna re-do the texture again too, with more randomness. I'm sick of doing it again but I don't really have a choice. Probably going to make it look more like the first idea I had, on the left.

I'm looking to make a fairly simple little RPG. Is Gamemaker 1 suitable for this?

Any good guides on using it, or do I not even need to bother with that since my idea is so bread and butter.
Also I'm not looking to sell it, just a fangame, so I'm not above just pirating whatever.

Oh uh, this is my combat model by the by.

RPGMaker is the ultimate in "just a fangame" "fairly simple little" RPGs. GM would be the next step up from that, which would require more work but give you more flexibility.

I kinda wanted to make it similar to Earthbound, and it will be anyways in design choice aside from the combat. I'd make the combat work the same way too, but I don't think GM or RPG Maker can emulate that can they?

I know more about EB's story than its combat, but I'm told it has some kind of timing mechanic involved? GM could manage that, RPGMaker I really have no clue (though there is a general specifically for RPGMaker that you could ask, should you decide to go that route).

Earthbound has a rolling HP Bar and yeah, there's the timing to the music to do more damage. I'm less interested in the latter, and more in the former. You can take fatal damage, but as long as you pop a healing item or spell, or end the combat before the HP rolls to 0, the damage will stop.

Where should I put my efforts if I can't art, learning vector art or pixel art?

It starts 9 days before itch's so there's time to make a game for each jam

There's three reasons I'd use Unity over Unreal:
C# - Blueprints are a pain
Enlighten - Semi-dynamic GI > Baked GI
Mobile - UE4 has huge file sizes and limited mobile support esp for 3d games
