As an outsider, this appalled me. Why is America so limited to two parties? Is it just so difficult for a party to appeal on a federal rather than just state level?

Mostly because people are afraid they will waste their vote by voting a 3rd party candidate so they vote one of the big two.
While i am happy for the major gains the Libertarians have made this election they should concentrate more on local elections where people aren't afraid to waste their vote then slowly work their way up to the presidency.
