You know, I wish the SK games threw just a few more major gameplay elements in there.

Look at Musou, which the 3D games often get compared to. Senran undoubtedly has a more solid combat system than Musou, but a Senran game still doesn't feel as well rounded as a good Musou game. Why? Because every Musou level has a war going on. On top of killing hoards of enemies and beating bosses, you need to:

-Protect your general
-Protect your bases (both of these are helped along by killing enemy bosses, which will help determine who you go after first)
-Take their bases
-Tackle a variety of objectives

Also, beyond the standard levels described above, there's a second mode resembling their Empires games. And beyond leveling up, characters progress by collecting weapons and accessories in levels.

There's no reason why Senran couldn't have that much content, though given the premise, I'd recommend giving it more of a proper third person action game design where there's a lot of emphasis put on navigating and exploring levels.

Mate, you don't know if any senrans got Almighty attacks expect maybe Kagura.

Senrans might feel a bit like a musou just because of the hordes of mooks, but they're really beat em ups, the 3D games are 3D beat em ups, beat everything up follow the arrow saying go, really no different from final fight or streets of rage in that sense.

I'll be honest: I played a few of those side scrolling action games back in the day, but I didn't like them enough to really remember them. My gaming golden age was not my SNES.

I'd say that standards have risen since then, at least in regards to the amount of content that you need to provide. Complex combat systems have been combined with good level design and character growth to give us amazing franchises like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry. Senran can and should at least attempt to place themselves at something resembling modern quality standards.
