It doesn't really affect the final mission as the dead Salarian pathfinder gets replaced. The Krogan will join you in one of the fights at the end. I think if you save Raeka the Salarians join you instead. Might be wrong about that.

Saving the Captain requires having all pathfinders: Turian, Asari, and Salarian to back you up. It doesn't matter which one. I saved the Captain with all the "replacements".

The turret is great because its a pretty bulky distraction and does good damage. Personally I prefer the ranged tech powers because the little drone that follows you gives you bonuses that disappear if it self-destructs which it will in Flamethrower and Cryo Beam range

After that I can high tail it while they burn, get into cover, and then incinerate to detonate the flamethrowers prime.
