I'm pretty sure I know what hardware they're using. If they're running the original L-series, it's a bored and stroked L28ET with cams and an LD28 crank, aftermarket ECU, big turbo and cam. Or they got lazy and did a JZ/RB swap.

Well the 80s and 90s were kind of a big boom in terms of Japanese sports cars and such.
Also probably slight nostalgia, or romantization for things you like. I get the same way about Group B despite it being dead for a few years by the time I was born, let alone knew what it was.
