Pic related, gonna get myself one of these for €450 soon. 220000km, grey colour, engine is in good condition. Has abyone had one of these before? What should I look out for when purchasing one of these cuties?

Just picked this up for 1500, 1989 Honda Prelude in great condition

Pig Fat General ?

Poor fag desu

>when you take your car out with a friend and hit a rock on a dirt road
I feel so stupid, fucking hell
I'm glad this shitbox is solid as fuck.

this little slut

98 200sx 1.6 manny
>stocc as fucc

I am now the proud owner of not 1, but 2 shitboxes!
>Plan is to take the tranny out of the hatch and put it in the vert, since the verts engine runs, but the tranny is frozen.
>Then, over the next 2 or 3 years, slowly work on building up this hatchback into a monster. Bridgeport with the rebuild, completely redoing the interior, new paint, all new glass, carbon fiber hood to get rid of the god awful scoop one of the last owners put on to supply his "CAI" with cold air, despite the fact the stock intake was a CAI already. Either a T2 tranny or a custom built one, depending on availability. New standalone ECU, injectors, the whole works.
For now though, I get a deep socket and some spark plugs next week to see if I can manage to turn it over at least once.

The only particular issues you'll have to look for with these is rust. Especially around the rear axle mounting points, and fixing that would be a huge undertaking. So jack the car up and have a look.

Everything else is pretty solid if it was maintained properly.

I had one for a couple of years (mine was 550€ with 140k on it) and it was very practical, reliable and cheap to run. Also kinda nimble.
But I had to throw it away eventually because it was too rusty.

So if runs well and looks alright from below, go for it!

My mind has been tainted by shitposting enough that that was what first came to my mind as well.

Do ford escort GTs make good shit boxes? Been eyeing one primarily because of the Mazda engine which I'm familiar with.

I was wondering what fucking car you were talking about but I realized you talked of the US version.
Iguess they'd be good considering there's not any major thing that can go wrong but there might be electronic issues and rust.
If it's free of both, there's no reason not to DD it.

Yeah we didn't get the rwd version in the states unfortunately. I wish.

>RWD
we didnt get it either buddy, the cosworth was the only one AWD and it's super fucking expensive.

Going to the bargain lot of a stealership tomorrow to look at some mk2 focii. They all have 150k+ miles but hopefully I can find one with no severe rot and an intact head gasket. Gonna try to get them to install a new clutch for me in exchange for getting jewed, because I'd rather not have to do it myself in a couple thousand miles.

1989 Nissan shitbox, 133hp and shit all torks.

How do I get more power out of this piece of shit? Been playing with the idea of adding an intercooler, no idea how I raise the boost.

>rwd

You're thinking of the Sierra buddy

Bleeder valve on the wastegate should do the trick for more boost.

just add a turbo

is the mazda 323f a good choice for a shitbox? especially the 1.5 88 hp version? or are they just slow rustbuckets?

older euro Escorts are RWD (like 70's models)

Rust is a problem, can't imagine the 1.5 to be very exciting but it should be plenty reliable.

yeah, but these are super rare, sadly.
Apparently, they're insane fun, tho.

Correct. MK1 and 2 are rwd. fwd/awd from mk3 onward

yea, rust is a bitch

Why didn't I think of this, was thinking about everything else, thanks fampai.
Already has a turbo and an alternator

actually, why are 70s ecoboxes so fucking expensive in europe? even a 70s corolla is 14k in germany.

cause they rotted away or got thrown out

Probably because most of them have either been crushed, rusted away or exported to Slavland or Africa.

legit jelly, where are u from so I can search, love the pop up lights and the taillights

Corollas and Escorts? Mostly rally/racing fame tax. Others can be found cheaper.
Pic related for instance, the Opel Kadett City can be found for 1000-2000€ on my area. And is rwd, which should please the Veeky Forumstists that care about that

when I joined the military they sold off my 800 dollar Paeseo. I'm on a quest to buy another one but a convertible.

Pic related what my old one looked like.

I only buy $200 cars
>best $200 car
'96 Volvo 850 turbo, 225 bhp
>current $200 car
'89 Toyota Camry, 155 bhp

Bought GF a shitbox after she graduated from her old Volvo (whiteblock, burning way too much oil to pass smog).

Honestly we both love driving this thing. It has the 2.3 Duratec which is basically a licensed Mazda L engine. 145hp (loses 5 for CA compliance but whatev), A/T doesn't get in the way. Interior and exterior are cheap but it's not a rustbucket.

Basically she wanted a Mazda 3, but I got her one for 1/5 the price (seriously, people in CA want 5k+ for their clapped out, rusty, 200k+ Mazda3s).

It's a fun car to drive. Loads of low-end power to get 0-30-60 quickly. Runs out of steam and rattles around 80. Fun to toss around in the hills although the A/T needs to be locked out into 3rd for long climbs like most autotragics. Generally for 130k miles and $1900 from a dealer with a warranty we're happy.

I'm tempted to snag a cheap 5speed ZX2 myself now. Seeing good omes for ~1200.

Anyone else here /poorfagtaste/? I'm almost out of college and I have a job lined up with Paypal, but I'm afraid of the shitboxes of today becoming the classics of tomorrow...

I want my Esprit! I want my MR2! I need muh pop-ups!!!

Im just waiting to get a ford capri for a good price.

Its pretty shitty though they have been getting more and more expensive over the years. A 1.6 use to be under a grand now they are anywhere under 5 grand.

So
>bleed valve
>interkuhler
>pop off valve delete
Anything else cheap and worthwhile for my turbo Nissan budget tuning?

If you really want to run much more boost, you're gonna need injectors that can deliver enough fuel to not lean out and blow your engine.
You could probably just decap your stock ones.

nice, looking for one myself.

Stock boost is 0.4 bar/7 psi, thinking about 0.5 or so, nothing major at all, just some very very light boost raising. My objective would be to get from 133hp to 140.
Mostly done for fun and bragging rights

Looking for a shitbox for under £1.5k, I was considering a Ford Puma or SportKA but I've been told the rear axles have a habit of rusting off, is that true? Anything else worth consideration?

i-is it okay if I have a $1500 shitbox?

'99 Integra LS, autotragic unfortunately. Gonna be saving up for that manual swap.

Pic related is why it was so low. No frame damage fortunately, and a new bumper/hood shouldn't be too expensive if I can find a good deal on Craigslist.

Do you have hyundai coupe where you live ?
I'd also consider an Astra coupe or even a 406 coupe.

Mazda MX-3/MX-6, but only if you can get them with the V6

im searching for a puma too but there seems to be no real alternative to the 1.7 in that price range.

my more expensive car is my shitbox and this one only gets baby on sunny days. plus it has power windows and power steering and AC and my expensive car has only power steering and nothing else.
pic related shitbox vw in the back.

A Nissan NX is practically the same thing but faster.

>MX-6
just get a probe then. same car just better looking and cheaper.

the R stands for retarded.
but this was a bit more than 1000$

This is the apex of shitboxery

Drove one of those for like half a year. 2.0l 72hp diesel engine, manual gearbox. It was my "first" car (not the first I drove in my entire life, but the one I started driving seriously). Bitch is unbreakable. Amazing low & smooth suspension. Steering is good, but not great, very unresponsive. You can wiggle left and right and it would drive straight. Probably an issue, not really car-savvy, so no idea. Cold around -20 degrees Celsius, started like nothing, which really surprised me. Interior? It looks cheap, but damn, NOT A SINGLE squeek or any sound in whole interior, absolutely silent, so for the value of this car - I'm VERY happy with interior quality. Mine has velour seats, very comfy and sturdy. Really practical car, not the biggest one, but really can carry stuff. Folding rear seats also are adjustable for moving back and forward (just like front ones). The gearbox is fucking amazing - easy to use and, for an unexperienced driver, very great. Speed? Well it is 72hp, nothing special, but when driving 60kmh feels like im flying ATLEAST 80kmh and really start getting nervous, as the sound isolation is bad, I start hearing road noise, therefore this makes me feel as I'm driving really fast and think that I'll crash somewhere with minimal chances of survining (shitbox). Exterior design is very well made - that shooting brake design make it look sporty, fast and rare-ish. Very reliable car, just keeps and keeps going. Rust is shit. There are literal holes in body that rusted out. Paid like 500 euros for it. More than happy for the value. Actually thinking of buying 2.0 130hp petrol in the future, just for the memories. But they're somewhat rare, so probably gonna look in to German auto market.

$800 and about a grand in parts including tires and an alignment and shit.

It's a nice shitbox now.

did you actually get an
>implying
sticker?

Behold, the king of barrels

Friend of mine had one, and left it in Portugal. It's probably still there

>Finnish
Where did you buy it ?
Fellow Finn here

had one of those, they are so comfy.

These are pretty great shitboxes. Godlike rustproofing, STRONK engine, not very complicated and dirt fucking cheap.

i suppose this is the thread i belong in

only one thing stops an audi 80 b3 and b4
>the driver has died of old age

the bodies simply dont rust.
crap to drive though, therefore i have an E30.

Just picked up this '85 CRX HF with 330k miles for 1200 burger bucks. Looking forward to restoring it over the summer.

I can confirms focuses of those years are badass. One saved my life before.

Just bought an 85 AW11 I spotted on my way home from work last week. 140k miles, runs and drives. I need to replace the thermostat and probably the radiator fans as well as the clutch, it's rough to shift. It's gonna be a project, but I just couldn't help myself when I saw it. Got it for $850.

And the pop ups work!

You lucky fucker, I've been looking for one of these for ages.

It's a sweet little car, and adjusting the carb on it is kind of fun. No computerized components. Still gets 40 mpg. Everyone tries to race me though which is funny because this car is sloooooow.

B3 looks really shit. B4 is where its at. Drastic changes just with facelift.

Uusi-vitun-kaupunki.
Also own 2 750 BMWs and an E91 BMW, but those hardly apply to this thread.

well that one is the coolest from your collection :))

should i get a mk4 ford escort, it's the only 300$ car i can get that's not a fucking 1980s volkswagen, i like that it's kinda sporty looking but i hear parts availability is awful and it guzzles gas, what's everyones opinion

I have to disagree on that one, but I am becoming strangely attached to it. To the point that I am infact thinking about ghetto tuning it. It's also surprisingly nice to drive despite being a shitbox by design.
Aside for that, the thing has full service history from 1989 till 2014 and despite the terrible paint on it, it's in really good shape. I believe the "bonehead" will stay in my collection for a bit longer.

Oh yeah you're right, oops

Just buy them now while you're in college, that's what I'm doing. Bought myself a shitbike not too long ago

>Looks the part.
>Probably fun to throw around.
>80s Honda reliability.
>40mpg despite being old as fuck.

No wonder the CRZ couldn't live up to it.

I have one of these but an 05 with the 2.0 Duratec. I thought the 2.3 in the pre face-lift like those was a Zetec. Oh well. I wanted the Duratec because it was chain based whereas the Zetec was belt based. I have the ZX3, 05 in black post face-lift. My first car I took my driver's test in was an 04 LX Sedan with the 2.0 SPI. A bit anemic but it was always very reliable.

At that mileage I'd be looking out for automatic transmission repair work being done. Everyone I know with an 00 to 07 Focus with an Auto (basically mk1 in the US), has had transmission work done at 120 to 150k miles, somewhere in there. We bought our 04 automatic with 120 with a busted transmission. That's why I looked for a 5 speed when I bought the ZX3. I was never a fan of the automatics in those, they never seemed to be able to hold a gear for shit. Always jumping all over.

Other than that, they're great cars, generally pretty bulletproof otherwise, and for 1900 with that mileage even if you have to get transmission work done, I'd say it's worth it, as I've seen many of those make it far past 200k.

Top tier shitbox.

Had a quick look and found all three. I've always liked the styling of the 406 now you mention it, are they as fun to drive as the Puma?

I can only find one MX-3 and one Probe available, I'll keep an eye on them, thanks.

I've found the same, why do you want to avoid it? Scarcity of parts?

Current weekend car.
Working on a rolling restoration sort of. It's pretty rusty in some spots but the rust is generally getting better as I replace components, or at the very least not getting worse. I'm currently looking for a drivers door as that's the most visible rust that can be easily replaced out.

Doing shocks tonight. End goal is not mint condition, but a good driver that is solid as hell mechanically and looks great. And hopefully not super rusty everywhere. There's some visual mods I want to make but I'm more worried about the mechanical first. With 320K miles on it, it needs a bit.

Had it for 3 years, spent $2400 on it, best money I've ever spent. So comfy and relatively fast and I've learned so much about cars working on this tank.

what engine/tranny? Is it long gearbox or short?
You've got a great car right there, I wish you luck, buddy.

HAHA YOUR POOR LOL

HAHA

YOU'RE*

HAHA

Made a thread on one of these to see if I should get one or not. Tbh I'm a little sketched out now.

Do you feel like you're going to die in that thing?

>35 mpg
>diesel

I'm a poorfag and I can drive as much as I want because this car is so cheap

dat's smexy

nice looking car though

Nah just gotta be careful. It's akin to riding a motorcycle, just don't fuck up.

>tfw my car would have been regarded as a shitbox because it's a 40 year old base model commuter
>tfw it's actually not because it was well taken care of throughout its life

I suppose this car is sitting at the top of its potential shitbox energy.

Potential shitbox here but I know nothing about it. What do you guys think about this mustang?

I don't care what anyone says about your shitboxes you guys keep your cars running, with some of them being in pretty good condition. Keep it up anons.

What could possibly be wrong in a $500 V6 Mustang...

Well yeah but sometimes life will fuck you up regardless of how careful you are.

That's what I'm asking. It actually looks like shit tho so I'm gonna pass.

avoid the puma? no i dont want to avoid it but a lot of them are in bad shape in my area. espcially the 1.7s. Im waiting for a nice one since a month now.

what are you poorfags thinking about the cougar?

No, avoid the 1.7. I've had some concerns because there was a very limited run of the Yamaha engines, so parts could be a problem. That and the rust I mentioned make me a little wary.

/pfg/ is love, /pfg/ is life

well you could just part out a 200 euro 1.7, they are everywhere. so far as i heard the 1.7 should be reliable.

The 1.7 is reliable as fuck, but it isn't the easiest engine to work on.
The problems with the Puma are roughly the same as all 90's euro Fords: prone to rust and electrical gremlins for days.

I love the interior of the ZXs, I hope it cleans up nice

Think I might bite on this, '85 Corolla with 260k miles for $1500. Not a huge fan of the color but whatever.

If it helps I really rather like the color

The biggest problem is the gigantic rear arches panel, if it rusts the whole thing needs to be repainted if you have it done professionally

M104 DOHC 3.0 with whatever automatic they put in the 124, I'm not sure there's too many models, but I'm pretty sure it's just their standard hydro 4 speed like the early 129 SLs had.

All 80s and 90s Toyota have a special place in my heart no other cars can steal.

>rust
