Thousands of years ago, some Ionians befriended a species of shapeshifting animal spirits and eventually they got frisky and fucked eachother - creating magical human-animal hybrids known as vastaya.

Vastaya originated from Ionia but eventually migrated to other parts of Rune Terra over the course of thousands of years.

Some vastaya are more human-like than animal-like and vice-versa. Since they are a magically-inclined race, some are extremely powerful and capable of living for thousands of years (the ones that still do were probably some of the first vastaya to exist. Ahri is probably one of these.) There are also some that can switch between a more human form, a hybrid form or a literal animal form.

The Ionian princess-singer from that one Zaunite backstory is a vastaya-in-hiding and thanks to her input + the new champions' lore indications, we can assume that Ionia's vastaya are largely some hippy tree-hugging group who're now being genocided by Ionia's humans for whatever reason.

Also the following champions have definitely been retconned into vastayans: Ahri, Rengar and Wukong.

Nami, Fizz, Twitch, Alistar, Nidalee and Volibear are still questionable.
