I mean Echoes isn't out yet but, you can if you want. Just remember its quite different game then the rest of the series.

SoV/Echoes should be fine, yeah. It made many improvement from Gaiden, very comparable to Sacred Stones now (which I also recommend playing). Try out 1 or 3, 4 (then 5 afterwards), 6, 9, and Conquest when you get a chance. These games tend to be friendly to players regardless of entry point.

If you're spending money, I recommend skipping over Awakening unless you REALLY like Sacred Stones and old Gaiden-tier gameplay without having any other positives. Conquest should be fine with you if you like gameplay similar to 5 and 6.
