Alright, fuck that shit. After realizing that I don't really want a vulnerable web server running at home I made a twitch account like user recommended in the last thread, so here's my first pathetic little unity project (followed a tutorial, but added score handling myself). Could anybody give it a quick spin to check if it werks? Takes just a few sec. Thanks. Just curious if it runs on other systems, though there should be no reason why not.

Just a heads up that Amnesia Fortnight 2017 is happening now (at least the first part of it). I've personally really enjoyed seeing the videos they've put out in the past and getting a glimpse into some game dev process at Double Fine. If nothing else, they are at least very creative folks.

It's working for me, but your scoring system is a little wonky if you manage to get the ball stuck between a paddle and a wall, or if you hit it from the side of your paddle.

Trying to find workflow for looking at what parts of a game i should work on. A big part of the game will be menues and management, but i figure ill start with combat since thats fun and where the work from management is supposed to culminate. Sort of.

Tried researching other answers. First results were by nodevs and zoe quinn... didnt she only ever make a overly simple text-based?

Can i get yesdev input on where to focus time or some articles from decent devs on it? Im using game maker

Current thought: movement, interaction, basic combat come first followed by intense menues

Thanks a lot for testing. And yeah I know, the scoring system is crap. You should only get points for hitting the other player's back wall, the respawn the ball and so on. Just started with getting into Unity 4.6 yesterday, and most of it is from a tutorial anyways. Right now I only wanted to test the workflow, get it online and verify that other people can run it.

Really? Didn't happen for me so far, and to be honest I have no clue what I should do about it (except for checking if the ball is out of bounds) - must be a fuckup of Unity's collision system, maybe the ball is getting too fast when you bounce it between paddle and your own back wall. Thanks for the heads up.

Ultimately it's up to you how/where you want to spend your time. But it's pretty normal to start with the actual game elements and preliminary debug controls, then add "boring" stuff like menus, loading/saving maps etc later on, sometimes even shortly before releasing.

I was installing with yum and the little hash marks filling up the loading bar made me wonder if anything else than a rogue-like or a strictly tile based game would be possible.

the issue is that ascii games are effectively very low "resolution" since individual characters basically act as pixels, so you'd need to figure out strategies to deal with that

I already have a reasonable grasp of gamemaker. As my scope grows however and I'm looking into making more of an actual -game- rather than a few tutorials mashed together, the looming $100 price tag keeps inching closer.
