Mormonism is similar to islam

>mormonism is similar to islam

where does this meme come from? why do people think this Veeky Forums?

Probably because christianity itself is so similar

There are some striking similarities between Smith and Muhammad. Both created private cults for self aggrandizement and endless supply of pussy,

it's more similar to islam than christianity

Nah Mohammad was very likely genuine, Smith however was clearly your standard cult leader

they're both cults created from abrahamic tradition by psychopaths in order to have a band of devoted followers who enable their petty desires and vices

>dude harems lmao

>Nah Mohammad was very likely genuine

you mean he genuinely heard voices in his head, as oposed to smith who just made his up?

Yes, precisely. Mohammed genuinely believed he was god's last prophet, probably. Smith was a con man

that somehow makes it all even sadder

Why is it sadder? and what similar are there to both of these religions? I don't understand, Mormonism is supposed to be a branch of Christianity right?

It depends. A lot of things that Smith did before and after he founded Mormonism is seen as a fraud today, but they were different times. Just think about UFO cults, people in 200 years will properly be just as skeptical of rational, educated human beings who believed they were visited by little green men.
The same's true with Smith's seeing stone and his gold tablets. I mean the episode when he gets visited by an angel as a boy was properly just an embellishment they made up later, but Smith at the very least believed that he had received some kind of message from God.

if mormonism is 'a branch of christianity' then so is islam. They're both far removed from the abrahamic faith they came from.
Admittedly islam is nowhere near as out there as mormonism

He probably genuinely thought it was his sacred duty to bring a new religion to his peoole, but everything else about the Islam/the Koran sound meticulously constructed to avoid all the pitfalls Christianity had suffered. It is too careful to be spontaneous the way legitimately hearing voices would be.

Unless those voices actually were the Angel Gabriel's.

>Why is it sadder?

well when someone is a conman he at least has some idea what hes doing and why, theres a kind of consciusnes about it even if he cant help himself

if someone is literaly schizophrenic and starts a cult that picks up and becomes a major world religion, and one of the strictest and most violent at that, thats so typically human its saddening

there are some similarities but not that significant, the poligamy thing in the begining, the emphasis on the figure of the prophet, the emphasis on purity, and thats pretty much it

>but everything else about the Islam/the Koran sound meticulously constructed to avoid all the pitfalls Christianity had suffered

in what sense?

Off the top of my head, something like the historical arguments about Jesus' divinity (was he, if so how much, if so what were the mechance, etc) due to the gospels being unclear and being the product of an evolving consensus. The way Muhammed tackled the Jesus problem was to state everything about Isa very clearly and explicitly, to give the exact proper interpretation of what happened, and saying that any disagreements lead to hellfire. Or taking the idea that scripture was "God-breathed" (even people who believe in Biblical inerrancy believe they're Paul's letters, for example) and running with it to make the Koran the literal word of God (to the extent that my repeated implication that Muhammed wrote/composed it would probably be considered blasphemous.)

To a certain extent it seems like a minor example, but the Koran is full of that repeating formula: take something from Judaism/Christianity that caused confusion or arguments, give a clear and concise interpretation that seems designed to close the book on it, and threaten hellfire for those who continue the argument. Designed to solve problems.

Its because mormons dont have the veil of time which other religions do

they were both male too! holy shit the similarities just keep piling up
