because they have hard cc and pack huge base damage aka they dont need much gold to be useful mages

well velkoz is considerably less popular in s7 than in s6, but brand and zyra need 2 items really to do damage, haverelevant damage anyway and pack decent cc.

brand ult with rylais is a massive engage/disengage/teamfighting tool

malz ratios got gutted and his base damage got improved/moved to level scaling

and they nerfed his voidlings hp, speed, spawntime and damage
