A lof of people believe the story is garbage in this game and that nothing really makes sence plot wise dispite having played the game for years simply because they haven't actually listened to what the npc's have to say.

Chris has been wrong about many things very frequently. I remember when some autist figured that warbands (i think) location was based on some unintuitive mapping from the merciless locations to some map layout and there was a tonne of proof and chris said this was wrong twice. Like a week later in the patch notes it says they fixed warbands accidentally using merc locations for their map locations. Also in some interview in 2.0 when talking about damage mitigation chris was arguing that damage mitigation was completely fine but when they brought up taste, which was basically required to play, chris was like "oh i don't know what that item is". You just can't trust the guy on any level, take everything he says with a grain of salt.
