You don't need to grind, you just need to get a good army. Your own character can be shit but if you have a good army you can easily defeat the enemy lords, even with a much smaller army(and having low casualties): You just need to refine your tactics.

Example: I usually have an army composed of 50% Rhodok crossbowmen, 30% Nord infantry and 20% Swadian cavalry.

I do the following: I send my cavalry far away so that they don't get attacked by anyone.

Send my crossbowmen high up a hill, and send my Nord infantry to form a shieldwall so that the crossbowmen don't get hit by enemy fire.

The enemy will start approaching to my army infantry and crossbowmen. When they are near my infantry, I send the cavalry to stand just behind the enemy. Finally when the enemy army gets on melee with my infantry, they should already have been weakened by my crossbowmen. I send a cavalry charge, and the enemy is crushed between my infantry and the cavalry. I win without really needing to get into the battle myself.

No idea, I only use patrols to keep looters, bandits and enemy parties away. Large numbers work for that.
