Is it ultimately Good to indoctrinate people to feel guilty for everything if the end result is that they do better and improve?

Christians should feel guilt for all the people they have murdered, enslaved and raped.

It's immoral for an authority figure to psychologically burden people with delusions.
Personally It's really my main gripe with all religions.
It's one thing to help people through tough times by showing compassion and providing hope, but it's different to actually CAUSE more anxiety by harping on fake ass beliefs.

The anxiety comes from not confessing. And isn't the act of confessing your sins so ultimately freeing though? It just seems like a primitive form of therapy to me. Having the authority figure there speaking on behalf of God is the part that gives it meaning.

coming from a catholic country i must say i dont understand what you people mean when you talk about catholic guilt

catholicism is a guilt free religion, you dont have to feel guilty about shit, its allready pressuposed youre a sinner and youre going to purgatory if not straight to hell(of course every time someone dies its declared hes gone to heaven for the sake of the family feels but no one is fooled) if you sinned in some way that does make you feel personaly ashamed or guilty its just part of the cross you bear and so is anything you might personaly do to atone for it make up for or fix it, and if theres something that realy bugs you you can just go do confession, and if its realy bad maybe gibe moneyz to the church or something, and youre fine, your sins are pardoned, no more guilt

not only that, in most catholic countries the form traditional catholicism takes is usualy rather tribal, family-oriented and conductive to simple and effective mentalities that do not scoff at anything, from opportunism to corruption and nepotism to violence, to the point of outright robery and even genocide, as long as its 'our guys' doing it its all fine, the church even supports them cause the church always supports the hometeam, and guilt is never ever even mentioned, like not even once

so... i just dont know what youre talking about, i mean most of my family are catholic, some rather oldschool, my grandma basicaly worshiped her saints like little idols, i was raised catholic, we had catechism in school taught by actual monks etc etc... and iv never encoutered this 'catholic guilt' thing you talk about, every time i hear of it im realy confused, if anything traditional catholicism implicitly tells you - go on do your shit, we got your back

youre a human, you have strong, biologicaly inherent tendencies towards rather problematic and dangerous behaviors, and thats just you as a individual organism, human populations are far worse this way

of course this is all mediated trough socialisation and aculturation, most of us are relatively well adjusted individuals othervise wed all be in prison or insane asilum or in a state of constant confrontation with others, were all taught not to be sexualy agressive towards others and to not hurt and abuse those weaker than ourselves, and to not take what is not ours to take and to especialy avoid public displays of violence, but notice we need to be taught and conditioned into this trough upbringing, education, culture, experience etc, and still this does not stop many people when the opportunity occurs

and all this is just the superficial stuff, if you go into deeper more intrapersonal things its just as fucked if not more so, our thinking, our subconscious functioning, the way we relate to ourselves, were destructive and selfdestructive, hipocritical, insincere or outright liars, were hatefull and resentfull and often hopelesly occluded, were inherently egoistic and selfish, sadomasochistic and basicaly calibrated to the logic of submission and dominance, were prone to all sorts of lazines and greed and lack discipline and overindulge in momentary impulses and tend to fall into behavioral sinkholes all the time, and so on and so on, it would take a whole thread to list it all, its just basic instinctive patterns we can hardly do anything about

this is our basic nature, by inertia and enthropy this spontaneously tends to become the dominant way we functioning unless we invest energy and willpower in the opposite direction, or if were not conditioned to be inhibited in certain ways

Imbuing people with certain morals and encouraging shame for breaking moral standards is valuable if we want to have a society that actually fucking functions, religion notwithstanding. We don't need to tell people that Jesus cries every time they masturbates, but we do need to tell them certain behaviors are deemed socially unacceptable and that they shouldn't do it.
