Started playing quake a few weeks ago. I've got movement down, started to really nail circle jumps after failing for a long time. I'm wondering though, how do people track the timing of powerups in duels? It's hard for me to keep track mentally of multiple things at once like that, so much of my attention is focused on keeping fast movement around the map and aiming.

look at the timer and make a mental note of an item respawning in 30 seconds

Next champ better be bones or bitterman. Preferably with the metal skeleton skin.

Get a better weapon from spawn. The starting weapons are all shit. It's just 2 maps for now, so remember where to move after each spawn location to get a decent weapon.

Keep an eye on health. There are enough bubbles and shards from dead enemies.

Dodging is as important as aiming.

Pick the right area to fight for your weapon choice. Each weapon aims differently and has different advantages. Keep moving at all times.
With heavy machine gun (the upgrade from the starter mg) and railgun you can zoom in to receive a damage bonus.


Try to finish off wounded players, shoot in players backs.

Keep a sane mouse sensitivity to be able to aim the weapons.

Don't try to get quad if you're in a weak position, rather camp it out a little and shoot the players contesting for it in the back, pick it up if it gets dropped an no one is close.

Higher FPS are an advantage, try to get at the absolute minimum constant 60 fps.

There will be lots of changes. For now it's a muddied something with no visibility and bad sound. There will be better maps and more customization. I've expected a more refined game too. I still rather play QL in any case.

At least in QL you can run away from the beam. Not sure what I even see in QC when getting shot at.

Basically you get to turn really well.
Retaining speed in this game is very powerful.

although i haven't played that map. the mossy stone jungle one would flip the fuck out sometimes when i went near or through the teleporter but be completely fine at other times.

You either get an intuition for what's up at every moment or you time it using the clock.
My intuition is pretty ok now and I tend to nail items +-2 seconds. Which certainly hurts you but I feel it's more fun to be able to focus on the game.

It does for a lot of people they're just fanboys.
Those are the kinds of issues you can expect to get fixed if they don't want the game to flop.
It wouldn't happen in a real ID game.

That happens rarely (but getting quad and then having the devs shaft you while players kill you and steal it feels the worst). The bigger issue is the smaller hickups all over the place and how projectiles just don't seem to be synced properly. If you pay attention in the game I'm sure you will notice that if you think back at when you first saw the rockets being shot it's like 3-5 meters in front of the player. Makes it stupid hard to dodge.

This happens to me all the time. And the ping is not a problem generally
I don't get why they didn't use the quake 3 net code. It's a very well documented system and its not hard to implement.

Probably because it's not the quake 3 engine and the Q3 netcode isn't very good compared to QL or CPMA.

Proofs? I've played both betas and haven't seen anyone conplain about lag aside from 200 ping BRs.

Haven't experienced ANY bugs and the gameplay is solid.

I had the exact same issue last week, but somehow fixed it. I had a GTX 770 and was running a really old driver, so I tried upgrading to the one you have, but the installation file was corrupted no matter how many times I downloaded it, so I installed the version before that (378.92) instead. It wasn't fixed and was about to give up, but then I rebooted just in case and that's the last time I ever got one of those freezes. No idea if that was what did it, but you could perhaps try rolling back to the driver I have as well. Don't forget to reboot too.

What's more important than timing to the exact second is knowing in which order the items will spawn.
But to time to the second you should learn spawn times from every 5 seconds on the clock.
Like Armors: 5->30, 10->35, 15->40......50->15, 55->20
And Mega Health: 5->40, 10->45, 15->50....50->25. 55->30.
Then you only ever have to add or subtract 2 seconds.
For example you pick up RA at 48. 50->15-2=13.

I'm 1800+ elo in duel. I don't time on the second for 99% of the time.

In control you want to know if MH or RA comes first. So if you pick up RA, go to MH you should know if it took longer or shorter than 10 sec. Then you should add a yellow to your routine to deny that to your opponent. So after or before you take RA, you take a yellow. So next time it will be before/after the RA as well.

Out of control either time RA or MH to the second to do damage or steal it. Or block him somehow to make both items clash, then proceed to take the other one he's can't pickup (you should know where the opponent is 90% of the time in duel).

The items I try to time 100% are the 2nd RED and 2nd MEGA. So if I have the spawn to get RA i'll time the 2nd one and try to get an idea when the opponent took his MH.

How good is your aim? I feel that that context is very much needed to assess if the tactics you describe would be enough for oneself to reach 1800.

I've tried intuitive "cycling" like you describe, no timing to the second, just an awareness of the order. It kinda works sometimes but I can't get this

And timing be feel only works when I don't get caught up in fights too much. Against aggressive opponents I can't time anything by feel. Exact timing is the only hope at that point since then even if I missed an item I can still do the math and figure out when it comes back the next time. When I play be feel I myself have to play aggressively and show up for every item. Any item that's taken in my absence just falls off the wagon for good.
