/indie/ - Indie and Obscure Games General

Last thread: >What the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Braid, Limbo, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, Burrito Galaxy, Gone Home, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles. Absorbed the /lite/ general some time ago.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in Veeky Forums), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indie and miscellaneous games, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone, except namefags. And be sure to make a new thread if nobody else does.

And since I see "Valkyria Chronicles" in the OP, I'd like to ask how that game is. I briefly tried it, and was disappointed by how linear it was, but I heard that it's apparently a lot better than I thought, so could someone be nice enough to give me a rundown of it?

i don't know why styg would add shotguns when burst firing rifles/smgs did their job in the game as AoE cone damage dealers

how are you guys expecting shotguns to work?

Does Valkyria Chronicles even count as indie by the generals definition? I mean, it was developed and published by a SEGA and I'd hardly call it obscure.

>i don't know why styg would add shotguns when burst firing rifles/smgs did their job in the game as AoE cone damage dealers
I already brought this up many times, both here and on the offical forum.

>I'm also a little worried shotguns will end up too similar to assault rifles. In both cases the defining feature is the ability to shoot a lot of projectiles at once, hitting multiple targets or dealing a lot of damage up close.

Styg's answer was
>This should not be the case. For one, the shotgun's effectiveness against single target drops rapidly with distance (precision drops quickly and the cone of attack is big), which is not so much the case with assault rifles.

So I'm asuming they will be like ARs but without their decent medium range effectiveness with semi-auto, but even more deadly up close. Most likely a total opposite of sniper rifles with ARs being a mix of both.

>Does Valkyria Chronicles even count as indie by the generals definition?

>as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles.

So /indie/ is kind of like the miscellaneous games general?

To be honest, I've always felt a general like that should exist.

Classic vidya shotgun. Melee weapon.

Bastard Bonds or Battle Brothers?

>So /indie/ is kind of like the miscellaneous games general?
Yes since /jrpg/, /cyb/, /hmg/, and /wrpg/ fell off Veeky Forums months to years ago

Even a single tile of range beyond melee range is a big deal.

It's such a big deal that Force Emission had to be nerfed, it used to give one extra tile of range to unarmed attacks.

Battle Brothers is a much better game in pretty much every single way imaginable.

hopefully AP costs and shotgun stats are balanced in a way that makes it much more easier and efficient to combo with psi attacks, melee weapons, and traps than it is with ARs

What's wrong with ARs AP cost? You can get as lows as 9 AP/shot with 7.62 Hornet with Rapid Reloader, that's only 27 AP per burst.

Yuo can easily get 2 bursts in one turn with Commando and still have 23 AP to spare for something else, 43 with adrenaline/Blitz, 63 with both.

The 'obscure' allows us to take in people from deid off generals.

/indie/ - dead generals general

/jrpg/ died because SMT and FF and Neptunia split

youtube.com/watch?v=WtidU8msp7k

Now this is what I call a proper remaster. Even if it's seventeen times (!) bigger than the original CD version.

Pretty much. It's like a nursing home for dying generals. It allows the few remaining people to continue discussing their games until there's no one left. And it's also limbo for games that are in a temporary state of inactivity, where it's not yet certain whether their general will resurrect once more or they'll just die.

remove spider

Something in the author's notes for The Uncle That Works For Nintendo struck out at me, that if video game heroes were truly intelligent, they would hate us for the hell we put them through. When I was young I occasionally got similar vibes, brief instances where I believed that video game characters MIGHT be real and they hated me for the torture I give them.

I thought /jrpgg/ died because it was such a festering hive of shitposting that there were periods where the mods did not allow it to exist.

Flinthook is really fuuun.

I hope we are going to use her as the OP image forever.

I object to Rise of Nations. It's a RTS, it belongs to /civ4xg/.

/egg/ - Engineering Games General is for this purpose too
We already used to be Space Voxel Games General, but that died since none of those games update very often, and THAT used to Corneroids General.

We usually use skeletons in space suits as our mascot. It seems fitting.

Okay, how do I git gud at battle brothers? I feel like I'm just doing something wrong here in the early game. Do I just recruit a whole bunch of cheap shitters in the beginning to get more bodies, or do I only hire a few more decent guys? Also, what way should I go on the map to get more bandit thugs and less raiders/undead/orcs?

>We usually use skeletons in space suits as our mascot.
Got any images of that saved?

Here.

Not any in particular, it's such a common idea we just grab one of the hundreds other people have drawn
We including me draw other silly shit every now and then though

I'm curios about that too.

Very cute.

Thank you.

I encourage you to try and claim /xivg/ for the spiders.

They are very apathetic to thread OPs and won't fight back.

So now that I've beaten the Dullaha, what am I supposed to do? Do all the quests? I already have all the items and spells.

>They are very apathetic to thread OPs
Are they now?

By that I mean you can basically put anything in their OP and they won't even complain about it.

Occasionally one of their resident shitposters does whatever the fuck this is though.

...

So are spears a no go?

Spears? In Styg? What the hell?

Is the shipwreck in The Witness supposed to be a reference to the wreck of Hesperus?

Spears will have the same range as all other melee weapons.

Quoting Styg:
>The weapons have the same reach as other melee weapons. We experimented a bit with increasing the range for spears but that did not work out satisfactory.

The on-hit effect (25% chance to block x mechanical damage) is supposed to represent the advantage spears have instead.

I would prefer if spears had at least one more tile of range too but it is how it is.

Mario was never in any danger though

I always was under the impression that every time I loaded a save after a Game Over, I would just create a new timeline and leave a world where the bad guy won behind me.

Of course, as a kid, I couldn't explain it, so my parents thought I overreacted to game overs.

Judging by one of the audio logs, I'd guess so. Not certain

Was Yooka Laylee that bad?

Going off of dunkey's and yahtzee's review the game seems like a perfectly fine banjo-like collectathon albeit with some dumb design decisions and some poor signposting. Though if anyone was expecting it to be exactly as good as kazooie they were delusional.

I wonder if dates for the released games would be worthwhile or just clustering the info.

>Going off of dunkey's and yahtzee's review
Stopped reading there.

yet you felt the need to give me a (You)
thanks

Being developed by a bunch of ex-Rare devs with about the same development time and funding as the originals, all on a preexisting engine which cuts out a third of the work for them I expected it to be better than the originals.
At least thats what I expected at the time before more and more kickstarter projects massively disappointed.

>I expected it to be better than the originals.
then I'm sorry to say this but you were stupid for thinking so. Even outside of kickstarters being a crapshot a (relatively) independent game will most likely not achieve the same kind of game that a first party major title will.

It was 100% justified seeing as the asker posted eceleb shit.

>eceleb shit
>mfw I have no clue who the fat fuck in is or who Dunkey or Yathzee are.

dunkey is a fat youtube funny man and yahtzee is a critic

i didn't intend to start e-celeb shit I was just stating the reviews i had seen

It's not impossible, some games have managed to do it like Shovel Knight. There was no reason to doubt Playtonic after they got 2 million dollarinos outside of pure cynicism.

But isn't everyone's a critic? Why is yhatzee's opinion worth more than some random faggot on Steam?

>There was no reason to doubt Playtonic after they got 2 million dollarinos outside of pure cynicism.
I think I would call that more "not having incredibly high expectations" instead of "cynicism".

I didn't say yahtzee's opinion was worth anything more than some random faggot on steam I'm saying those are the two opinions I've seen.

There's nothing wrong with bringing up the criticisms of e-celebs like Yahtzee or Mark Brown of indie games. Stand up for yourself instead of blaming me for posting a yooka laylee image.

Oh, okay. My bad.

>Stand up for yourself instead of blaming me for posting a yooka laylee image.
what the fuck are you even talking about now my dude

My posts on this topic are

then who is

i dunno some guy

Wasn't me either.

I am

lel what the fuck is going on here?

Are you sure?

>meanwhile I died in the very first mario level when I was a kid because I couldn't find the button to jump

that goomba's probably the most deadly thing

Its not such a high expectation. The original games werent that great and I could probably design a better sequel myself to be quite honest.
The problem of lack of publisher oversight in indie games compared to AAA is not as relevant to Rare's development of Banjo Kazooie. Yooka Laylee isnt even an indie game, Team 17 published them and extensively assisted Playtonic in development and QA.
I didnt expect the same level of polish but Yooka-Laylee is so below average compared to Banjo that something must have went really wrong

Peut-être, mais une omellette au fromage, ça cale la cuirasse quelque chose de bien. Mais rien qu'une sale petite frappe dans ton genre ne peut connaître, la cuisine et le luxe, c'est pas dans tes habitudes, baltringue.

Well yeah the difference bewteen team17 and nintendo overseeing your work is worlds of differences. XCX development has some nice interviews to that topic that make clear how good big n is at pulling and loosing the leash.

i feel like this should be in every video game from now on

Maybe following main path was a better idea.

Well that was underwhelming. Decent end-fight at the very least.
Not sure what the fuck the girl at the end was about either and apparently the painful mode ending makes even less fucking sense.

...

...

I need a cute game.

I need to play Pathologic again, but it's hard to work up the courage. I got to day 4 the first time, but that was on my older computer and save file.

The Grey Garden
Slime Rancher

Googled Grey Garden, it's a TV show of some kind?
Slime Rancher looks good, but it's early access?

Not that guy but slime rancher has been early access for a while but seems to be doing it properly, they've been adding shit for a while.

I've been thinking about buying it since I first heard of it, but it's on humble sale at the moment and that's as good an excuse as I'll ever get.

vgperson.com/games/graygarden.htm
No it's a japanese rpgmaker game.

>cute
>" Violence and gore. Some characters are beaten bloody, one loses an arm, etc. Implied torture and cannibalism in one ending.Implied attempt at sexual assault/harrassment. "
WOW
MUCH CUTE
SUCH ADORABLE

...

>he doesn't know who Yahtzee is
He's a successful bar and hat owner

> stardew Valley
it's pure chilling, it really grown on me, have you tried it yet?

he sold the bar years ago didn't he, not to mention he moved to california like a year or two ago

Cute girls doing cute things on a cute adventure.

He looks like a spider lover too.

I was interested because I kinda like the Harvest Moon games but what I read about it turned me away.
If I remember right, it was :
>art is meh
>it's one of these games where rather than picking a girl because you love her, you just pick the one with the most horrible backstory to make her happy
>spelunking and dungeoning is boring

>>it's one of these games where rather than picking a girl because you love her, you just pick the one with the most horrible backstory to make her happy
isn't that the norm for harvest moon

I said successful, not current.

Not in the ones I played.

I desperately need the picture of Mae and Bea driving, with Bea going 'shut the fuck up mae'

it was just in the last thread, i posted it

i don't have it saved though

Anyone want Spintires on steam?
Just got the Humble Bundle for Slime Rancher and I already have ST.

>art is meh
one positive point I think, as it resembles old school snes rpg, like Zelda and secret of mana
the action combat as well, and pretty smooth running engine if I say so
>waifu picking
the way it seems they have genetic personalities, but develop as your relationship grows,
to be fair i initially thought they were all bitches but now can't choose between them
>terrible past
unless you're /rk9000/ they're fine, just don't expect virgins
>boring dungeon
that's is kind of true, though its not grindy
one of the positive points of the game is that you're switching between gameplay between farming/dungeon/fishing/socialising,
and basically you can completely ignore one of these aspects of you wanted to

if anyone wants to talk more or discuss waifus, I'm open to it

What's this? Is it fun or comfy?

>don't expect virgins
FUCKING
DROPPED
Used goods are for losers and Licorice is mah waifu.

I'm getting so hyped up for ESA2 I want to play ESA1 again

>Big-ass forests
>Shallow rivers
>Varying terrain
>You drive a big vehicle

That's basically it.
It's a simulator, but focuses on realistic physics between you and the ground instead of vehicle controls.
It is the sort of game a trucker plays after he's retired and feels nostalgic.

It is pure comfy.
