Also do people ever play with each other on this? I'm struggling to find any parties at all. Is this mostly just a solo game other than trading?

I have no idea what that means. Play the game, complete normal, cruel, see what works for you, what playstyle interests you, and what skills/classes you can use that fit that playstyle. Some skills are bad, but for the most part you won't realize it until you hit end game.

Some do, some don't. There aren't any inherent benefits to group play such as increased experience gain like in D2. Most avoid it because the additional visual clutter tends to mask danger cues, and you don't learn anything carrying someone or getting carried. As a beginner, definitely avoid group play. Learning on your own is fine, and you won't be pressured into going too slow or too fast.

What are some skill gems you would like see improvement in, and in what way?
I think it would be cool for lightning tendrils to have a longer range, maybe a little shorter than scorching Ray, and also have it become a channeling skill. It's a fun skill gem but it's aoe really fucks it
