Alright Veeky Forums, tell me if I'm being an idiot.
I'm getting married next Oct, and though she is getting her wedding, I only wanted one thing; to drive away in an old car with a "just married" sign and cans dragging behind.
Now, I could rent a really nice one for $1500 for 4 hours, not get my way and get a limo for $500, or I can buy this for $3000, and slowly get it looking good before the wedding.
Am I being reasonable or being an idiot?
1958 Ford Fairlane 352 V8 with a 3spd auto Guy says it doesn't leak/burn any oil. Runs, drives, and stops well. Surface rust only, ac doesn't work (but is complete), and it needs shocks.
Obviously not going to buy it with out crawling all over it, but is the 352 (which he says is rare) going to cause me headaches? Am I getting ripped off? Will I possibly be able to Sunday drove this without crying at the pump?
>I'm getting married Yes, you're an idiot. Glad I could help.

Ya ya, knew that was coming.
Jason Jenkins
He did mention something about fucking up the $800 exhaust he put on it with the old shocks. I figured as long as they don't kill me, they're fine for now.
Lucas Williams
I would love to know any more about these cars. I've noticed even really good ones are cheap, why is that?
Owen Collins
Last pic. And yes, buying from a boomer.

Well I'd buy it in a heart beat, but than again I have money to burn
>Inspection? Have you looked at having it inspected by a trusted mechanic >You mentioned some rust How bad is it? >You mentioned it runs Did you start it up and take it for a spin?
From what I can see in the pictures it does look like a good deal given it runs fine
I would have some more questions though mostly about your situation
Do you have a house? Do you have the money for this car and what comes with it? If you are barely making it and living in an apartment, I wouldn't worry about what car I drove in on the wedding night..
Hudson Morales
I would do the rental. 4 door classic cars are worthless.
Parker Thomas
I live in an apartment, but can store it on base with 0 issues. Apart from a new engine/trans, I have the money to slowly work on it over the next year. I'm not hurting for money, but this will make a decent dent in my bank account.
I'm assuming you're a Marine. The BAH isn't worth it bro. Jody gonna get your girl.
Landon Stewart
Coastie is in his name though.

The 352 is the top engine for 58-59 Fords. It produced like 300HP. It's a relatively rare option. It is however an FE so parts will be available

Cause it's a late 50s sedan. There's a metric fuckton of them and they aren't as desirable as coupes. Nothing wrong with them, just not as sought after so the price stays low. My favorite is finding an Edsel in relatively great condition that ends up selling for 4-5k. 70 years later and still nobody wants them.
Blake Morales
Coastie, been with her since college. Already get bah, so that's not the issue.
Gee, if only those werent across the country from me. Planning on getting out and using my degree with the coast guard job experience.

Fukkin do it. try to jew him down some. Bring up that it's a 4 door, doors probably sag, feel the floor for water leaks from rain water, and the shocks are bad. Find as much stuff as you can to bring the price down. Obviously don't gouge him or be a dick but start at $2000 and work up until you meet in the middle. As long as she doesn't smoke knock or tick that's not a bad price. Bring a magnet and a flashlight when you inspect it. Feel for bad body panels eg waviness and use the magnet to look for bondo. Make sure to check the oil dipstick to see if the oil has shit in it, same with the tyranny fluid. Test drive it at various speeds make sure it doesn't over heat and has decent oil pressure after you drive it look under it to see if it's leaking oil (rear main seal) other than that she looks pretty decent. As far as Sunday driving it, you'll be fine. My 79 trans am was a daily driver restoration project. The dude said it wouldn't make it 200 miles to where I lived. I drove it home and drove it every day since.
Liam Johnson
really though, if you have the time/money to make it look good enough that your wife would be proud to be seen in it (whatever level that may be), do it. if not, i'd rent the nice one and get another that you would enjoy restoring.
Aaron Ward
Fuck my ass dude. Buy it. If that was for sale in my area it would be at least $7K or more
Jordan Wright
I'm working on one right now and boy do those things leak from right about everywhere.. the headgasket*bad*, valve cover gaskets, the oil filter adapter plate, the rear main seal, the transmission cover, the rear transmission driveshaft seal(idr the specific name), and just about every part of the power steering since the fluid they take for power steering isn't made any more.. its a mess. on the contrast, its a really smooth running engine now a lot of work has been done to it and it rides pretty comfy. power steering still leaks though (new cylinder is ~400$).
I would say its a good deal for that price, but for a wedding I think renting something like a Rolls Royce would be more awesome though.

Damn man... You had to go and ruin the vibe... And I think it's manual everything

A British POS will always be second to glorious American engineering.
Seriously though just polish up the crome get it painted and it should be able to drive for a little bit.
Alexander Baker
I am a british car specialist, quiet lurker, and this guy I also didn't mention how the oil pan gasket leaked and how inconvenient it is to change the oil pan gasket, you have to hoist the engine to drop the oil pan because of a frame crossmember and radiator in the way.
I have never seen a british car leak more than this ford, none (except glorious jaguar, rolls royce and Bentley) ride as nicely though. its a great cruising car you can just kinda drive with one finger.
Lincoln Allen
Y u do dis?
Sebastian Johnson
You deserve to know, although not all of them are as bad as his.
Connor James
do not suffer as I have suffered
Jacob Brooks
First of all a 352 that doesn't leak is a goddamn unicorn the rear main seals on all fe's are a crap and a bear to get right. Second 352's are not rare at all maybe in that car but i cant say for sure. Thirdly you will be crying a the pump a lot 6 mpg is about what you'll get.
Caleb Cruz
As a happily but realistic married man I can tell you a couple important things
1) You should probably get any of the major dumb man stuff you ever want bought before you get married
and
2) Your fiance is going to want the wedding to be perfect and for you to be pretty involved in the planning and the whole getting-married experience so if it's a thing you want to "slowly get looking good" you better be good at time management
Thomas Roberts
>tyranny fluid Audibly keked
Joseph Williams
I'd rent one, friend. Do you really want to deal with all the maintenance owning a 70 year old car? If the case you want to just use one for marriage, then rent one.
Evan Sullivan
haha, fucking auto correct.
Angel Foster
What's it like being a dog on a leash?
Hudson Garcia
4-doors are definitely cool, you can fuck the bitch in the backseat
Ayden Lee
Way better than being neutered like pussy mgtows
Ryder Smith
Have you restored a car before?
If not there is no way in hell you will be able to DIY before next Oct.
Gabriel Phillips
Don't buy it, you will put all that work into it and your wife will just make you sell it to buy her a new garden shed or hot tub.
Luis Jenkins
I would do it.
Matthew Watson
Is this what sedan owners tell themselves? I almost feel sorry for people who don't think coupes are the coolest car body type.
