Why am I being punished for leaving before I even enter? Penalty games for quickplay is already a joke, I shouldn't be punished for leaving as soon as I backfill when it's a-okay to leave during setup.

You generally get put in games with people who are the same level as you, within a range.
When you're a level 1, you shouldn't see anyone with stars on either team, yours or the enemies'. That range will move up as you do, and by level 50 or 60 you shouldn't see anyone below level 25 or so.

It's because of this level grouping that you pretty much only get stuck with morons for a while, because 99 times out of a hundred, that level 1 in your game isn't some GM's new smurf. Only when you get higher and your level range starts to open up will you even have a chance of being matched with non-morons.

But that's just QP. In comp, the system hardly seems to give a shit about level, and just focuses on SR.
So if you really think you're hot stuff and only want to play with players as good as you, hop into comp as soon as possible.

Theres a certain timelimit for how long a match can be stuck in "waiting for players". It takes longer to fill up the game if one of the players already connected leaves. You are potentially making 10 people have to re-queue and blizzard wants to penalize this.

Also you can filter by game-mode in custom games. You get XP for them too :)
