Hiragana and Katakana are easily to learn but not that useful. You are better off starting with learning spoken language first. Once you have a grammar and vocab base then start learning the written shit (and cursing whoever thought Kanji was a good idea).

Speaking- speaking comes naturally from listening, which should be obtained through natural course of watching anime.

Why would you want to explain the sounds when you can actually do the sounds for examples. You think it is going to take a half hour to do it? You can do a quick video on how the vowels and R's are done in Japanese and there wouldn't be any guessing.

You're really better off watching someone explain it then doing the drills and using flash cards. Rather than one or the other, doing both gives the best results.

Tale of Genji is entirely kana.

After you have that down, learn kana followed by kanji. Learning -kana first doesn't really accomplish anything.

It's legitimately terrible.
They could have made it a pure VN and it would have literally been 100x better.

Kana literally takes a week to learn, and it helps if you want to import a non text heavy game like puyo puyo tetris or one of the miku games before they come out in english.
But by all means, save one of the simplest things to learn until later for no good reason
