yuropoor here
why is it "illegal" to register certain imports in murrica?
The most common reason is because burger crash test standards were not met.
does do luck still make body kits?
The actual reason is because Benz got pissy that Americans got sick of getting subpar models and importing the good stuff straight from Europe, so lobbied for a ban on unofficially imported cars or something.
oh wow what the fuck
i feel kinda bad driving a '96 benz now
It was price as well. At the time people discovered it was vastly cheaper to import a Euro Benz than it was to buy one of the shitty USDMs off the lot. They had to secure the inflated pricing.
That, and the legacy of the Chicken Tax meant US domestic manufacturers know they can get away with outright blocking markets rather than having to compete in them.
You need it registered
It's not illegal to import these cars. Its illegal to register them as normal passenger vehicles.
Basically this. Someone found out you could get MB cars for cheaper if you imported them yourself instead of buying them from stateside dealers, so MB lobbied like fuck to get an import ban instated.
So we americans can thank the germans for getting cucked out of our favorite jap cars.
