No, it's War For The Overworld.

It has some very nice ideas (like the beasts having their own portals, or the tavern to recover the money you paid your troops, or torturing enemies to death to recover their souls and infuse it in one of your creatures to make it extremely powerful), but it suffers from being not generic enough. So instead of having an army of giant spiders and spiders, you have Shadows, Bafus (blind, floating creatures), Oculus (slim beholders) and some insectoid thingy.

War For the Overworld is literally DK3. Also they had the Casino where your creatures spent their earnings in DK2. You could either let them win to make them happy or rig the casino to give you money.

What's the best setup for flak cover in a fleet? A separate destroyer/cruiser config dedicated to it or just have a single flak turret on one of my standard designs, replacing a medium plasma?

fleet power isnt striclty indicative of relative power once you start getting into the tens of thousands. Under ideal circumstances you can defeat fleets many times your power

But the casino made your creatures unhappy, while the tavern is mandatory, and make them happy to spend their money.

Not to mention you can feed them their own friends, and it's fucking hilarious.

Honestly, I can't say if it's good, but I like it. My complain is that it's a bit too slow, and it's all about doomstacks. Once your doomstack is dead, you're basically fucked up, the enemy can make a beeline to your core and kill you.
Gameplaywise, it plays like Dungeon Keeper 2 with a few more things, but the core gameplay is the same : make slaves out of mana, dig gold, make rooms, recruit monsters, send them to train, put them in the arena, etc...
The differences is that you get rituals to replace the offering to the gods, you choose what to unlock in the library, the maps are smaller, and you can have monsters that automatically drag beasts to the arena.

And the top monster is the vampire rather than Horny, but he's a pain in the ass to feed.

Just don't get the kalypso one, that one sucks. Dungeons it's called

There's a solution. Untick the colonize option for sectors and colonize them yourself.

But that's what I'm enjoying that the sectors do

How to fix your settings for a nice first-game, but still retaining challenge:

Keep size and galaxy type the same
Put in max AI empires, this way you will naturally avoid run-away blobs because the AI's will be competing against each other
Put in 2 advanced AI starts at least to have another threat apart from the 2 FE's
Keep FE's at 2
Keep Hab at x1
AI Agressiveness on NORMAL
Diff is ok
Allowed FTL on Any is ok but any sorry-ass Hyperlane memers will probably get decimated early on
Empire placement in CLUSTERS
Advanced Neighbors on OFF is ok for first time
Endgame crises on is good
Ironman off is also good for first time

Put in 20 AI's brah, or you will get blob-city in your galaxy, Also put Agressiveness back to normal and Cluster starts you wuss. Or you'll get the scenario where some douche spawns all by himself and gets to take a lot of systems unopposed and then he'll be a bitch to fight later on.

So why didn't /civ4xg/ like battleships again? Aren't they cost effective? Are they generally shitty? I'm thinking of building a couple of these. Is it a mistake?

Aren't cost effective, too slow to produce, too much maintenance, too big so easy to hit with L slots and extremely vulnerable to X slot weaponry.

By comparison, cruisers can be churned out far faster, are more cost effective and aren't as vulnerable to massed L slot weaponry and X slot sniping struggles to hit them reliably meaning more wasted shots.

The only thing battleships are good at is PD screening and taking out other battleships

Yep it's a mistake. The problem with battleships is they're only good against cruisers and other battleships, and are expensive and take ages to produce. Compared to cruisers that can be build in much shorter time and can be effective against every ship class because M slots are overpowered there's never a reason to bring battleships where a better solution wouldn't be to just build more cruisers.

Any other NSC users have suggestions on how to build this? Ignore the lopsided tech - recently defeated a FE so I'm researching some of their tech at the moment.

The problem with low amount of AI is that wars will never happen as the AI will wait to build more colonist or outposts to expand into empty space instead of taking it from others

throw in AI into the beast, start massproducing them with a screening force, then laugh at your enemies feeble attacks.

You know the cruiser meme isn't actually a meme right user? They're statistically the best ships in the game.

aggressive AI, sturdy well rounded defenses, ample weapon selection. Cruisers have it all.

BCs are only good for killing BCs.
Corvettes get #rekt by destroyers and don't fare well against cruisers.
Destroyers are just a weaker BC.

-Tropical species should have non-adaptable.
-Arctic ones should have very adaptable.

If I put afterburners on a defense station, will it fly?

I think NSC halves fleet power calculations.
I don't use it because bloat though.

Yeah, it halves it because of some weird bug that happens when fleet power gets too high.

Was able to beat what turned out to be a precursor fleet with Ion-age tech in Aurora 4x.
