Quake Champions currently is, and is certainly gonna stay, nothing more than a casual game.
Deal with it.
The developers are just using a familiar name for marketing reasons. The game is not even a fast paced reflex game. Here's why...
Quake used to be the purest skill-based fps game. It was raw. Everyone started even, and the only way to win was to get good. You had to have extremely good reflexes to have the slightest chance. Period.
How can Quake Champions be fast paced, if you have different classes and perks? You now need to think about the perks and powers of the class of the enemy... Does he have a shield? Is xyz power on cooldown? And so on. You can't act fast anymore, because you lose a fraction second analyzing the powers of the enemy.
Kids and casual players love to have classes and other perks, so they can still have a chance to win... without having good hand-eye coordination and reflexes.
No more need to play 10 hours every day to have enough skill to enjoy the game.
The game is free for one reason...
To attract a lot of players and then sell them cosmetic items and other shit to make them feel good and compensate for their lack of skill.
Do you think that making the game hard as the real Quake games would work for this type of business model?
If people find a free game too hard to enjoy, they'll just ditch it. And if they ditch it, they won't buy cosmetic items and bring in money to the greedy developers.
Now, I don't care if developers create such games and use similar economic models, because I stay away from them. But I'm really upset about this one, because they are fucking up the holy name of Quake, which had a good reputation and represented a specific genre.
