It's not that good. It has no damage or real stun attatched to it. It's good for dragging runners back into a teamfight and generating aggro on her and that's it. It's not bad, but it's not crazy good either.
Johanna shines at being a traditional tank, especially with her level 4 talent that gives her a load of health back, paired up with her Trait which purges soft CC effects. The downside is she doesn't do a lot of damage. But hey, that's what Greymane and Valera and so on are for.

Freezing and pushing lanes if left uncontested, and immensely buffing the amount of damage a pushing objective can do by disabling the buildings and minions after the objective is won.
For example, you get a full zerg rush going on Braxis, you send Sylvanas to go push with the zerg, she disables everything in their way, so they take less damage via disabling towers/forts. Alternatively if nobody is around to help you push with them and they still pose a threat to you to go in and support the zerg alone, start working on the opposite lane, she doesn't need minions to tank turrets for her, she can just disable and take out buildings alone. Her E is her escape obviously.
In teamfights, she's some medium damage, but mostly great for her team-wide vulnerability at 16. In a fight she's more debuffing support fire.

Largely useless on about 75% of the maps currently on rotation. She's an amazing lane pusher and sieger but if you end up on a map where those abilities mean jack shit and Teamfight is much more important then you kind of begin to understand why Quick Match is bullshit.

The getting ganked part is absolutely whats wrecked me lately, after looking up the effective build and strategies I've learned how to shut down / push the lanes, and solo capture merc camps. But then I get found and bursted down in a hot second, usually the Wail isnt fast enough to get me out.
I really like the hero but I want to make sure I'm useful, so... Lately I've been playing with friends but they're experienced, maybe I should go up against the AI more by myself to practice?

I wish Blizzard would take steps to teach players shit like, oh I dunno "There's no need to walk around looking for a fight, because that only leads to terrible trades most of the time. Instead consider soaking properly, then defaulting to doing mercs when absolutely nobody is on the map and walking around by yourself is far too risky unless you can safely get behind a nearby allied wall." and whatnot.
Like really basic shit like that, that could be easily taught to players. They NEED to break this bullshit fucking delusion that people have where they believe they need to charge at somebody just because they're the only ones present on a mini-map or something.
IF they did this, and IF they added more rules to QM which they can do now that we have so many more players, and IF they actually fixed their MMR algorithm for Ranked modes, this game would be in a massively better spot. Start the player teaching campaign, and actively fix the flaws in your modes, you stupid fucks.
