FJs are fun to own and drive. Biggest cons are gas mileage and blindspots. If you can drive a long truck/full-size van, you can drive an FJ just fine.

For a 4300lbs vehicle with a 4.0L V6, it has very good pick-up and torque. About the only things I need to be fearful of at stoplights are guys with giant V8s (5.0L+). Build quality is awesome too, everything is so over-built, I don't worry about taking it anywhere or breaking anything.

Best thing to do is put some good A/T or M/T tires on them, as they mostly came with P series all seasons from the factory. I'm going to level off the front to get rid of the forward rake, put on a hitch, and probably a bull-bar/brush guard.

Plus they're plateauing in value right now, since they've stopped making them. Demand shot up overnight, so I could be a real shit and probably sell it for more than I paid at this point. But I'm going to drive it forever. My dad has a 2008 with 320,000km - no issues to date, starts every time and runs great. Get a 2011+ if you do want one, though, they came with dual-VVTi and a different intake for more horsies.

I got it from eBay, you might have to check back every so often for a Japanese junkyard to post one up

Yikes, that's a little underpowered for me. But, it is a diesel so your empeegees must be alright. I think that's why we've never gotten a Hilux in North America - no one *really* gives a shit about gas mileage here, even though we say we do. Gas is still so cheap in Canada/America compared to other parts of the world, so the demand for a midsize diesel is almost non-existent. Everyone I see with a Tacoma/Canyon/Frontier has it lifted with giant A/T tires and 400lbs of extra shit - fuel economy is a non-issue lol.

Is it easy to work on? The FJs are pretty user friendly, unless you have to change a fucking lightbulb...
