The trade he set up sounds elaborate, but it's really a common play to the bear side. He bought puts and sold calls. That pair results in the trade paying for itself in terms of up-front cash, but both positions are only profitable if the price goes down. If Apple goes up after the earnings call, he is toast. His margin is borrowed.
