You use Soren/Calill because they're kind of okay compared to all the other mages. Fire magic is the best, followed by wind and lightning. You can try to use Ilyana, but I wouldn't recommend it on hard mode since training her in HM takes away resources the DB wants. Pelleas is my favorite mage but he's not very good
